China

Had they gone after China harder earlier especially in the context of the pandemic, Trump probably would have won the election. Good that they are going there now though.

Obama and Biden were very cosy with China and did little to change things. Trump is a dick but did well to go hard after China with lots of folks trying to get in the way. With the pandemic, it is now really clear to Americans how much of a threat they are. They have been stealing our IP and know how for years with no pushback from multiple prior administrations on both sides of the aisle. Has to stop.

Unfortunately Trump only President with the stones to confront China.Biden too weak and compromised by Hunter so China got president they wanted Gordon Chang our top China expert said Trump first president China feared.

What could have been done earlier? China and WHO were withholding information. Trump was being called a xenophobe for stopping air travel to China while Pelosi was encouraging people to visit Chinatown.

Do you believe China has been held to account for their role related to the pandemic?

Honestly, the United States would be in a different position today if Trump said the virus was real, we need to take it seriously and we will hold China accountable for their irresponsibility. Trump unfortunately decided to downplay the virus which made it impossible for him to blame China for the impact to us. Kind of hard to say that China should be held to account for something that was a democratic hoax.

Stop watching CNN. Trump has blamed China for the virus since the beginning. In fact he has castigated when he calls it the China virus. And you never answer the question. What could’ve been done to hold China accountable. At this point we know they withheld information but we don’t even know the origination nor degree of guilt they have.

Right, it was a balancing act that Trump failed to manage because he thought the economic toll from the pandemic would hurt his chances to win the election so he downplayed the virus. He gambled and lost.
What could have been done earlier? Exactly what they are doing now... plus pushing policies which would penalize China if they were found to be intentionally negligent.

Trump's rhetoric was much more concentrated about blaming democrats for their response to the virus instead of blaming China for the lack of transparency. Sure he called it the china virus, but then attacked democratic Governors for their response to it. He shouldn't have downplayed it.

You’re never going to persuade 50% of the population. We recognize we won’t persuade you. But, as stated numerous times, it’s remarkable how you continue to spew CNN tag lines and denials as to the good things Trump has done. Republicans see the good and the bad with Trump as evidenced by this small microcosm of life on LOTS but Dems here and elsewhere are either too dumb or stubborn or both to see things rationally

You continue to hear what you want to hear. Trump has been very clear about blaming China and taking actions. If you recall he was also trying to thread the needle on the trade deal while this was happening.

I think you guys are talking about two different things.

1) Trump clearly called out China right away and stopped travel to China even though he was castigated by Pelosi and Schumer for that right away but it was clearly the right decision. He has been very clear blaming China and the Who (which has been very confusing from the start). His policies and trade decisions have been the toughest on China no doubt and rightly so. So much American know how has been stolen from us from China its not even funny.

2) The other side of the coin is the messaging from Trump about how we should act during the pandemic, not wearing masks, this thing will go away in a month etc. was very confusing and lacked leadership. You can't argue with the fact that he missed a significant opportunity to speak to the American people clearly or get out of the way and let the medical folks do that and back them up. Faucci and crew clearly screwed up early on by saying not to wear masks to protect the PPE supply, but that was a huge mistake. Then Trump politicized wearing masks which was a massive mistake. Just a few weeks prior to the election at one of his outdoor rallies he busted Laura Ingraham for wearing a mask and has done that many times. Silly stuff.

Last time I watched any cable news was the week of the election. I don't watch cable news normally at all.

Unfortunately, I do view things rationally which is why I was one of the few here who understood what was happening with the virus and the potential devastation ahead of us.

I've recognized some of the good things that Trump has done. I do believe he will be recognized as one of the worst presidents in US history, so not surprisingly I have been more critical of him than others.

If you would like to discuss what you believe are his accomplishments, start a new thread. I might agree with some.

Exactly. Had he approached this as something that we need to take seriously because of China - people would have been on board. We would have been in a much better position than we are today where 9 months later, it was the number 1 cause of death last week. I think Trump gambled about how seriously to take the threat of the virus, and I think that was a gigantic mistake.

I don’t care what you agree with just like you don’t really care about my opinion which is Democrats are total phonies nowadays and I’m embarrassed it took me so long to look at things closely and then realize that. If it’s a Biden related negative issue, Dems have an awe shucks wait and see attitude. If it’s trump related, you know the dem response. Dems refuse to acknowledge that 50% of the people reject their out of control apologist, cancel culture, hypocritical viewpoints that are hidden by promises of lollipops and rainbows for everyone. Many 2016 Trump supporters and many republicans openly abandoned and trashed Trump for good reason. Good luck continuing to play the hate trump card when you actually have to get something done now.

Not sure what you are referring to specifically but Trump is president. Of course responses would be different when one is president.

I don't want everyone to have lollipops and rainbows. Just access to quality affordable healthcare, a clean environment and the ability to work in a robust economy.

Good luck continuing to play the hate trump card when you actually have to get something done now.

There we agree. Democrats need to do a better job standing for something now.

Through the end of February, Trump was praising China with CoVid response and sharing information.

Trump did not call out China right away. He was praising the China response and China's cooperation though February. Go look at his statements praising Xi. And perhaps he should not have taken out our doctors out of China so we would have had a more accurate appraisal of this virus from our people on the ground. Trump is gone. I can't wait for the day that his name is not mentioned everyday. This grotesque human being will be finally a thing off the past.

So what??? He was trying not to panic the country rightly or wrongly that is why. Big picture, he has called out China on many issues long before the pandemic including their monetary manipulation etc and rightfully so. He definitely says a lot of dumb shit no doubt, but no President in my lifetime has been as hard on China as he has and rightfully so. Obama wanted to opt into the Asia trade deal which was awful for America. Look at Trumps policies not his words which is hard to do for an attorney I know. Hopefully Biden continues the same tough stance on China in spite of his "connections" there.

You make these posts wayyyy to much about you, what you want, what you think. You ignore your party’s current agenda which is the issue at hand.

Not so fast. He will continue to hold rallies after he leaves office and may even announce a 2024 run quickly. It would keep his name relevant, which is what he wants.

This. Trumps messaging during the pandemic was terrible. But his stance and strategy on China was spot on and even the Democrats agree with that now.

There was plenty debate around the impact to the US, it most reports I read at the time was that the TPP was bad for China.

Look at Trumps policies not his words which is hard to do for an attorney I know.

Which policies though. The trade issues hurt the US as much as China. We had to bail out an industry because China stopped buying US agriculture. I don’t think they accomplished what they were aimed to do.

If you’re responding to one of my posts, I am just giving you my opinion. I’m not a democrat, just someone who is fairly liberal on the political spectrum so I don’t really have an interest in defending the party in general.
