I know we have a coach (and will for next year/2) but I have thought about Mooney when we hired Willard and I know this board has turned Hurley crazy (not saying its wrong) but never hear his name.

I dont know basketball ball too well and dont have much inside info just wondering about how some of our informed posters feel about him as a coach and as a fit even though it may never happen. Thanks

He turned down Seton Hall before they hired Willard plus he makes $1.1 million a year at Richmond.

Seems about right. I just meant am I right to like him as much as I do? I am someone who likes the "system" coach especially for a school like ours. It seems if you run a system that you dont have to "kill" it recruiting year in and year out (which has been our ultimate downfall for almost 10 years). Or is he more of a fraud on the way down type? He obviously didn't look great the other night letting that lead go. But has been to a sweet 16

Chris Mooney is a solid coach, Richmond usually played a very disciplined, effective offense.

10 yrs at Richmond, 187-146, four 20 win seasons, 2 NCAA's. I think SHU was looking at him 5 yrs ago but I don't think he had interest, not a bad thought at all.

Looks like SPK confirmed the " turn down " while I was writing my post, if SPK posted that it is true.

solid coach no question. But how he will recruit here im not very optimistic. Doesn't provoke excitement among potential recruits I don't believe. A poster HALLISBEST and no offense to him has fooled me and maybe many of us over the last year or more stating that in a week or so he will have big news. Personally I never saw it. IM sure today you may have seen where he wrote under SMOKE that an influential ALUM told him something could be brewing or the school is weighing their options. I asked him on his post to give a little more info because if this is true at least it gives us some hope. But no response. Hoping he is not always screwing around with us. But if we were to make a change Mooney turned us down but I know we have to try very hard to get someone with as I always say the IT factor. have to get someone who will bring instant credibility to the program. meaning get people talking an hopefully excited. then we have to start winning. Hoping the school sees that SJU is trying very hard to build their brand and that 2 ncaas and an nit in 5 years to them is not good enough. Sounds like what ORR did for us but we all know what happened . The rest is history. I just cant imagine Willard on our sideline next year let alone 2 years. HURLEY EITHER ONE OR AMAKER. You want to be immediately relevant . well hire one of those 3. now there are more out there but these 3 seem to fit us. I know about AMAKER but ill hope.

piratehall - I have no agenda against the Hurleys, in fact if one of the Hurleys was to be named SHU coach I would support him wholeheartedly , but I do have to disagree that this notion that the Hurleys have this great recruiting influence in the NJ. A check of the rosters of their schools show a lack of NJ players . Buffalo shows a few JC players and a number of Detroit players but no NJ/NY metro players while the URI roster shows many transfers and JC players and only a couple of local metro players( in fact the only NJ player seems to be possibly a walk on or a player that sees very little time). Now this doesn't mean that they couldn't recruit the metro area but please don't put their metro area recruiting prowess on a pedestal. We know what happens if the expectations are too great, there will be some who will never be satisfied.
