SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The No. 20 Seton Hall women’s basketball team cut a 32-point deficit down to seven in the second half but ultimately fell short, 86-74, to No. 24 DePaul on Tuesday night at Walsh Gymnasium. In the first match-up between two ranked opponents in the history of Walsh Gym, the Pirates (13-2, 3-1 BIG EAST) suffered their first home loss of the season and had a six-game winning streak snapped.
Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led The Hall with 23 points, including a career-high four 3-pointers, in the setback. Powell scored 20 of those points in the second half and added four steals to try and spark The Hall to an improbably comeback. Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) continued her strong start to conference play with a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double, her third double-double in four BIG EAST contests this year. Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) was the third Pirate in double-figures with 17 points.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, DePaul (11-5, 3-0) stretched a five-point lead entering the second frame into a 50-26 halftime advantage. An 8-0 run to open the third quarter ballooned the Blue Demon lead to 32 before The Hall attempted to mount a comeback.
Powell knocked down a triple at the end of the third to cut the lead to 18, and a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter sliced the lead to 66-58 with 6:32 to play. The Pirates would pull as close as seven in the final minutes of the contest before DePaul closed out the victory. Jessica January went for 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to notch DePaul’s first triple-double since 1989 and Chanise Jenkins led the Blue Demons with 21 points.
