NEWARK, N.J. - Sophomore Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) powered his way to his third-straight double-double while classmate Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with 14 points as the Seton Hall men’s basketball team eased past in-state rival Saint Peter’s, 72-46, Sunday at Prudential Center.

Delgado finished with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added 10 rebounds while Carrington posted his third team-leading scoring effort of the season on 5-of-8 (4-of-5 3FG) from the field as well. Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points, his eighth double-digit scoring performance of the year, and handed out a game-high three assists during a game in which all 13 active Pirates saw action.

Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) connected on a pair of triples as part of a nine-point, two-assist showing while Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) recorded eight points as Seton Hall improved to 8-2 on the year with its third-straight victory.

The performances were part of yet another well-balanced team effort that followed a victory over Troy on Thursday in which all five starters scored in double-figures as The Hall is playing its best basketball of the season leading into next Saturday’s marquee matchup with Wichita State at The Rock.

By comparison, Elias Desport led Saint Peter’s (3-5) with nine points as the Peacocks were limited to just 18-of-55 (.327) from the floor.

The Pirates shot out to an early 19-4 lead and never looked back, holding the Peacocks at bay by scoring 24 points off 15 SPU turnovers and posting a 19-to-9 advantage in second chance points.
Head Coach Kevin Willard on Angel Delgado:
“I think our guys are doing a better job of throwing him the basketball once in a while. He needs to touch the ball because the more touches he gets, the more engaged he gets which is just like any other big guy. He’s done a much better job the last two games on his pick and roll defense too and that’s helped him on the glass as well.”
Turning Point
For the second-straight game, Seton Hall scored 11 of the first 13 points in the contest and opened up a lead as large as 18 in the first half while holding the Peacocks to 20 points in the first period. The lead ballooned to as many as 29 points in the second half as the Pirates’ advantage never dipped below 20 points in the last 19 minutes.
Inside the Numbers
  • Carrington set a new career-high with four triples and has now shot 9-of-13 (.692) from downtown in the last three contests after going 6-for-26 (.231) in the seven games prior. The sophomore also has now scored in double-figures a team-best nine times this season, including the last eight
  • The Hall buried a season-high 10 3-pointers on the day; shooting 10-of-19 (.526) from deep.
  • Whitehead has now knocked down multiple 3-pointers in six of 10 games this season and has made at least one trey in every game except a 13-point performance in a Garden State Hardwood Classic victory over Rutgers (Dec. 5)
  • The Brooklyn native also handed out a game-high three assists and has finished with a team-high in helpers six times this year
  • Delgado extended a streak in which he has now grabbed double-digit rebounds in six consecutive games and now has four double-doubles overall this season (14 career). Last season’s BIG EAST rebounding champion and the conference leader in rebounds/game entering Sunday, Delgado’s four double-doubles are second-most in the league behind Marquette’s Henry Ellenson (5)
  • The big man has seen an upswing on the offensive end, scoring 36 points during the string of three consecutive double-doubles after totaling 24 points in the previous four games
  • Seton Hall’s starters out-scored the Saint Peter’s starting five, 53-to-25
  • The Hall scored 19 of the first 23 points of the contest; starting 7-of-8 from the field – including 4-of-4 from downtown – inside the first five minutes of the game
  • For the game, the Pirates out-scored the Peacocks, 31-to-6 over the opening five minutes of the first half and the first five of the second half combined
News & Notes
  • The Pirates have now won 13-straight non-conference home games and are 33-4 (.892) overall in such games in six seasons under Kevin Willard
  • Seton Hall is also now 53-8 all-time in non-conference games at Prudential Center since moving into the arena for the 2007-08 campaign (ninth season)
  • SHU has now won three games this season in which it never trailed
  • With an 8-2 start to the season, SHU has now won at least eight of its first 10 games in four of the last five years
  • The 46 points for Saint Peter’s are the second-fewest allowed by The Hall at Prudential Center behind only a 68-45 win against NJIT on December 19, 2011 and represent the lowest point total for a Seton Hall opponent since a 72-43 win over Maine last season in Walsh Gymnasium (December 27, 29 games). The fewest points allowed for the Pirates during the Kevin Willard era also came in Walsh when SHU got past UMKC, 75-36, in the 2012-13 opener
  • Sunday marked the eighth time overall that SHU has surrendered less than 50 points at The Rock and the first since a 63-47 win over Mercer in last year’s season opener (November 16)
  • The Hall is now 12-2 (.857) over the last three seasons when allowing 59 points or less
  • Junior walk-on Michael Dowdy Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) recorded his first career points with a deep 3-pointer in the second half
