Seton Hall associate head coach 2010 to Present

Shaheen Holloway, a native Pirate, followed head coach Kevin Willard to Seton Hall in March of 2010. The former Pirates' star is in his eighth year with Willard and his fifth as associate head coach at his alma mater. Holloway spent the prior three years as an assistant coach on Willard's staff at Iona College.

His primary responsibilities at the Hall are overseeing the Pirates' recruiting efforts, managing the player development program, and serving as a team liaison for Pirate Blue.

Prior to his working for Willard Holloway served as an administrative assistant for previous head coach Bobby Gonzalez. Then Holloway was responsible for coordinating film exchange, analyzing game tapes and assisting with scouting of opponents. He supervised fall conditioning as well as the year-round weight training program. Holloway was also responsible for academic progress reports for team members as well as the organization of all aspects of team travel for the Pirates.

Holloway is the Pirates' all-time assist leader with 681. He scored 1,588 points during his career, the 13th highest total in school history. He also recorded 231 steals (3rd all-time) and hit 185 three-pointers (7th all-time) in 116 games. In 2000, he was named the BIG EAST's Most Improved Player, while earning all-league status three times and All-Metropolitan accolades in each of his four seasons at Seton Hall.

After graduating from the Hall Holloway played professionally in England for the Chester Jets and London Towers as well as a season in Ulm, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey. Back in the U.S. he had stints with the Brooklyn Kings of the USBL and Newark, Las Vegas and Chicago in the ABA. He was invited to three preseason NBA camps with the Knicks, Nets and Golden State Warriors.

Strengths:

The most obvious strength is his history as a former McDonald's All American, great player at the Hall and his playing professional ball. During his lifelong basketball journey Holloway gained immeasurable experience in learning the game and how to teach it as well. He also 'speaks the language' of today's players and relates to them well.

Weaknesses:

Loyalty to a fault. You will not meet a more unassuming coach in the game than Holloway. He defects any and all credit for whatever he does to whomever is his boss. He did that with Gonzo (despite many behind the scene issues) and he does that now with Willard. Holloway has had many offers to leave the Hall for a Power 5 school but through loyalty to Willard and his alma mater has turned down better and more lucrative jobs to stay here.

Bottom Line:

Unfortunately and IMO unfairly Holloway's future with the Hall is probably tied to Willard's. It shouldn't be like that but it probably is. No SHU coach has been more responsible for whatever sucess we have had than Sha. He has been involved with many top 50 players but we have not closed on them for reasons I'm sure many are aware of.

This coming year:

As noted his future is most probably tied to that of his head coach's. Meaning that success is a prerequisite for his continued presence on our bench.

A few years ago it was Holloway who turned Jordan Theodore from a bench player under Gonzo to a Big East star under Willard. He now hopes to do the same with Whitehead and Carrington (his recruit).

Holloway more than any other SHU coach has gotten us involved with high quality players. That is continuing this summer as two of our major targets. Shamarie Ponds and Bryce Aikens are his.

Unfortunately recruiting at this juncture for the Hall is difficult with Kevin Willard being on the hot seat and the expected negative recruiting that has accompanied that.

Shaheen Holloway was great for the Hall as a player and has followed in those footsteps as our associate head coach. If there ever was a person you root for to stay with the Hall it is him.
