#13,: Dalton Soffer
6-4 190 Position SG/SF
I spoke to a college coach out west that watched Soffer play up until his rising HS senior year. He told me that he didn't think he was a Big East talent physically but he did say he could be used as a shooting specialist.
He also liked Soffer's ability to see the court and noted that he often hits the open man when double teamed. The question becomes how will he handle defensive pressure when facing an upgrade in talent.
The coach couched his remarks by saying the young man plays very hard, has attitude and is very teachable so maybe down the road he could be a rotation player. But in his opinion not in his first year.
Strengths:
Soffer has broad shoulders and good length. He can score at all three levels, especially from 3-point range. He is always on balance when releasing his shot and his release is smooth. He moves well without the ball and is a good passer in the half court set.
Weaknesses:
Soffer has a solid frame, but it will be interesting to see how he builds his body going forward. He is just a fair athlete with only a decent amount of bounce and quickness. Quicker defenders can cause issues with him when handling the ball.
Bottom Line:
Soffer doesn't have many physical tools in terms of athleticism, but he is a solid system player with ball skills and smooth jump shot.
This coming year:
I don't expect Soffer to see a lot of quality time. He will be the 4th guard on a team that has 4 guards.
Look for Soffer to be an outside shooting threat from the 2 or 3 when the need arises. That could be crucial at times for a team that goes into the season with questions regarding their shooting accuracy from range.
Willard has noted often this spring and summer that defense will be the calling card for this team. That doesn't bode well for a freshmen, especially one with questionable athletic ability.
I think Soffer will use this year as a learning experience, see what he can and cannot do at this level and then spend next summer working on various aspects of his game.
