Nothing that has happened this season has come close to upsetting me more than the thought of Dan Hurley, a Seton Hall alumnus who should have been hired five years ago, as the head coach at St. John's.

Up until now I strongly felt that Willard should be given another season because of the strong group that is coming back. I felt that as sophomores, they would show significant improvement and live up to the hype.

That has now changed.

SHU needs to call Dan right now and talk to him. This is not a situation where you know a coach is using you to get somewnere else. If Dan comes here I'm sure he will come with the mindset that this is his last coaching job. SHU will be throwing him a retirement party in about 20-25 years.

With that long-term view, SHU should make a bold Steinbrenner-like move. Borrow the money if you have to.

DO NOT LET DAN HURLEY GET TO ST. JOHN'S.

I agree with this 100%. SJU leadership being smarter then SHU leadership is something that would stick in my head for a very long time. He would out recruit willard for next years class in a few months on the job.

if SHU doesn't make a move after this news about LAVIN then lets face it. the administration is all BS when it comes to athletics especially basketball. They talked big when we and the CATHOLIC 7 formed the NEW BIG EAST. Well that's all it was TALK. We have a tv deal they said and we are in a league with like muded schools so we are going to put the pedal to the metal. Have a top notch program and settle for nothing less. All talk. If we keep Willard we will be at the bottom of this watered down conference for about 2 maybe 3 years. THE right coach can come in and immediately make us somewhat relevant immediately. And as soon as we win and get in the ncaas well we will be on our way. It will be like the times under PJ and to a lesser extent AMAKER and ORR. Cant believe DePaul and now SJU make a move and we sit in the background afraid to make a move. People talk about 20 million to upgrade and improve facilities. that's what supposed big time schools do. But the biggest area should have been the most important. The place we call home. Years ago the school should have started a fund raising drive for a 8 to 10 thousand seat off campus arena. We don't need restaurants and all the other things in the ROCK and don't need to play in NEWARK. People meaning potential recruits see where we play and see empty seats when we were at CONTINENTAL and A curtain at the ROCK. ridiculous. We spend 55 thousand a game to rent the ROCK againt everyone but it galls me that we pay to play the lower type teams there. And we stay at the SHORT HILLS HILTON before games. WHY? Maybe WILLARD has a suite there. All I know is we are in for a bad time if nothing is done and soon. remember 3 NCAAS IN THE LAST 21 YEARS PATHETIC.

They stay at the Hilton in Short Hills before games? What is this about?

And let's not short change Willard - he got us to the second round of the NIT a few years back (remember the parade down South Orange Ave). And the Paradise Jam Championship is still being shown on ESPN classic almost continuously.

Fun fact - Willard the first coach since Blaney to have a losing BE record every season.

Sigh.

Come on Board of Regents - show some leadership.

Below is the email I just sent to the address posted on the SHU site. (Without my name and address at the end.) Will it actually get read? I don't know.

A. Garbriel Esteban
President
Seton Hall University

Dear Dr. Esteban:

I hope you and your family are well.

I am writing to you regarding the Seton Hall University men's basketball coaching job.

As I'm sure you know, St. John's is looking for a basketball coach. Dan Hurley, a Seton Hall alumnus, seems to be at the top of their list. You cannot let this happen.

Do you see Kevin Willard as the SHU head coach five years from now? If he turns the program around will he stay at SHU? If you cannot answer those questions with a definitive yes, PLEASE call Dan right now.

I'm sure you know that thousands of SHU fans are going to be extremely upset if Dan is on the sidelines across the river for the next 25 years. Please think long-term and make a move. Keep the Jersey boy in Jersey.

Thank you.

Regards,

Hurley would not stay at St. John's for 25 years. Nor would he stay at Seton Hall that long.

JIIMSOULS, how do you know?

Why do you post a comment as if you just had a conversation about the matter with Dan?

Common sense. Coaches typically don't spend 25 years at the same school. If he's successful, he'll likely want to move up to another job.

Common sense in a dangerous thing in these parts...

Dan Hurley went to high school and college in Jersey.
He coached high school basketball in Jersey for nine years.
He coached at Rutgers in Jersey.
He tried to get on Amaker's staff at SHU, which is in Jersey.
His first college job was at Wagner on Staten Island which geographically should be part of Jersey.
His family is in Jersey.
His wife's family is in Jersey.
He talks as if he's from Jersey City.
I hear he loves wearing jerseys.

You don't have to be a gold shield NYPD detective to figure what could be his long-term home.

Bring Dan home, SHU. Bring him home.

Hopefully you spelled the President's name correctly on your actual email. That would be the first step in having your message taken seriously.

It seems as if he's already spent enough time in New Jersey. There are other places to live, especially when it comes to coaching college basketball.

A more appropriate analogue might be what Villanova did to snatch Jay Wright from Rutgers in 2001

worked out pretty well for them
