As bad as this riot at the Capitol was, what was more troubling was reading and hearing from people that I know concerning this. I naively thought that people would overwhelmingly reject and denounce the terrorism at the Capitol. But I was shocked to find so many people believed in what was happening . As a matter of fact people were using phrases like wanting and needing a civil war and "burn it down." The videos that have come out since the day of the riot have shown a far more dark side of this mob. Chants of "Hang Pence." bringing explosives and fighting officers. Trump has opened up the hole to the dangerous underbelly of this country. A world that was hidden and they had shame to be outed. They now stand proud and out and are coming for more.

I do believe there is a real danger of an assassination attempt of Joe Biden and perhaps perceived "traitors of Trump." I am just at a loss that people actually want a true rebellion against the United States cloaking themselves in bastardization as a "patriot."

This country cannot be saved by the Democrats. This must be eradicated by Republicans. We need leaders of the Republican Party to stand up like they did with Nixon, except this is a far more dangerous. Republicans do nothing to eradicate Trumpism, this will end up tearing our country apart. Trump will start a network and have an army of millions of people that will do and believe everything he says. Where are the Barry Goldwater in the Party?

Well said. Ive been disturbed that many people I know who I interact with in the community are still defending this human POS. Its pretty evident that we have many radicalized Trumpers (think Tim Mcveigh) If that mob was Islamic men those same people will be denouncing the terrorist attack, and rightfully so. But when it's a group of Maga hat wearing flag toting illiterates they call them Patriots.

I hope one thing that comes from this is that all violence can be denounced by both sides, including the left that had turned a blind eye to alot of BS that suited them. People need to stop being hypocrites and stand up to this BS whether its white or black doing the damage.

This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans, it’s about Americans and they’re faith in the institutions. I know plenty of people who are convinced China is corrupt, Russia is corrupt, North Korea is corrupt, and for the first time the USA is not only corrupt but the most corrupt of them all. This is going to take much more than Republicans to restore faith in the institutions. Think what you want about Trump, he leaves on a horrible note, but regardless DC is a swamp. Until Americans feel our leaders on both sides are working in our best interest, very choppy waters and rough sailing ahead. The far left is after police reform, they’re likely to get it. The far right is after DC reform, they’re not likely to get it.

as long as politicians look at problems as your side vs my side that’s who should fix it, we’re in deep trouble. Time for these people to man up as Americans and not Democrats or Republicans. If they did that, the far left and the far right would be outnumbered and wouldn’t have a seat at the table.

While I agree with you that it is an American problem, it is the Republicans that hold the key to stop it. They have to stop turning a blind eye or actually helping Trumpism. I hear that catchy slogan of the swamp and corruption. But those are terms of generalities. People want the end of corruption -great so do I. However, there will always be people who are corrupt. That is human nature.

One must deal with each instance of corruption. However, to exaggerate the corruption to such a point that our institutions are no longer respected, then it has gone too far. That is what Trump did. He made people distrust every American institution not for the betterment of the country but for his own benefit. Trump has followed a predictable pattern. Once people no longer serve his purpose, they are then treated as enemies. He demands loyalty yet does not feel to reciprocate that loyalty. Anyone who goes against him are conveniently labeled as traitors, corrupt, liars or fake news.

If people want to believe the craziness of Qanon and other crazy conspiracy theories, then we as a country are doomed. The real problem in this country comes from within. It is interesting how you think the far right is interested in "DC reform." That implication is that the far right is on the side of anti corruption and goodness. Seems as if you sympathize with the far right which is the greatest threat to this country. Trumpism must be stamped out of this country just like McCarthyism. And there is a link to both McCarthisim and Trumpism - Roy Cohn. That is no coincidence.

That's as irresponsible as believing it was on Nancy and Chuck to solve the problems on the left and it wasn't Trump's problem for the past 4 years. Those things that happened....still happened under Trump's presidency, Nancy's leadership, and Mitch's leadership. They all needed to be part of the solution. Whether or not one group holds the key, every one in government needs to be part of the solution.

Trump did benefit off the distrust of the government, no doubt about it. However Trump only got people to look deeper into things. If when people looked deeper, there was nothing to find, trust would be there. Unfortunately we find sexual harrassment slush funds, Loeffler selling and buying the right stocks right covid, Feinstein driving around with spies, etc. The swamp is on both sides. Unfortunately the more people look, the more reason there is to distrust the government. While it was for his benefit, those disgusting truths really still do exist. Should we have just let them continue and everyone remain blindly optimistic our government is doing the right things? The fact you're ignoring Trump came to power because negative truths in our system is a problem. If you don't recognize that as a problem, you can't fix it.

If you're American and you want America to live up to its ideals....it doesn't matter if you're democrat, republican, liberterian, etc you get your hands dirty and be part of the problem. You don't wait for someone else to fix the problem or ask someone else to fix the problem if you're a leader. If you're not a leader and you're in representing the people of USA, you should resign.

Disclaimer: As I was composing this, I was alerted that others have posted new material in this thread which my post does not consider.

Dangerous perhaps, but also an opportunity.

On the danger side, I'd be more worried about an attempt on Harris. The nut-jobs on the far right would not take out Uncle Joe because that would put Harris in the White House.

Biden will most likely be Gerald Ford 2.0 and of all the candidates on the slate he was probably the best positioned to so so. He needs to put a leash on Pelosi and Schumer and figure out a way to not marginalize or otherwise dismiss the Republican's in the Congress.

IMO, it would be great if Pelosi, Schumer, and McConnell would all go away. Of the three, Pelosi strikes me as the most dangerous.

While he could easily go the "elections have consequences route" I think doing so or advancing any agenda too quickly will not be good. I don't think that is in Biden's blood. We have seen it before with Gingrich but this time it would be on steroids. If Biden plays his cards right, he could ultimately advance many things on the Democratic agenda and in a manner that does not further divide the country. I am not sure I would agree with much of it, but if he does so in any semblance of cooperation and reconciling, he could leave a legacy as a great president. If it is, "hey, we won, F__k you" then we will have four more years of division.

Impeaching Trump will accomplishing nothing. The term "martyr" has been tossed about and I tend to agree. If they impeach him, it would give energy to the so called "movement"

I think the media could help this country a great deal by lettings the Trump story die. Don't feed it. Focus on supporting Biden and getting past this.

I think the idiots that stormed the capital were just that, idiots. I suspect some were emboldened by alcohol. I have yet to see any Patrick Henry like speeches. They reminded me of the dog that caught the car it was chasing. "Geez, I am sitting in Pelosi's office. Now what do I do? These people will be prosecuted and will do time. The guy who killed the capital police officer may get death.

In my circle of friends most disliked Trump's antics but were in favor of his stance on issues. Taxes, energy, foreign policy, immigration, healthcare, jobs, education. I think the majority of the 75M that voted for him fall into the camp. Right message, wrong messenger but willing to tolerate his antics. At this point that same circle of friends, given a choice none will tolerate the messenger anymore.

Other than the fringes, I do not see the viability of Trump leading any movement after this election.

One encouraging sign is that the markets seem to be taking this in stride, perhaps embracing it. Another encouraging sign is the vaccine. We'll get the distribution straightened out and hopefully the spring will breath the much need freedom we all crave.

At this point Trump is now toxic to Republicans and the the majority of the 75M that supported his agenda. Any politician that wants to continue the same stance on issues has to do so without associating himself with Trump. Trumpism as you call it may smolder a bit but it will be with the fringe.

I hope you are right. However, I think that fringe is bigger than what you think. Much bigger. There are people that you would not think were part of this wacky far right conspiracy faction that are indeed like minded and believe that the Capitol should have went up in flames.

I hope that was sarcasm. Many people feared the worst after trump list. I fear the this was the tip of the iceberg. People having trouble differentiating between American patriots and the actions of the SS.

I've said similar for a while.

Term limits for every elected position at the local, state and federal level
End special interest groups of all stripes
End lobbying
Strong laws and enforcement against corruption and politically connected dealings
Follow the Constitution

True public service, akin to Mr. Smith goes to Washington.

In the span of less than a week, Trump went from the likely GOP 2024 front runner to likely not in the running at all.

Exactly.

Trump being gone only fixes a small problem. Washington is a swamp (we need a new term for that). The $$$ at play down there are just too big. I have my own hands in some of it and I see what goes on.

FWIW, I recently watch Designated Survivor. To the extent Biden can operate in the middle, despite him being a career politician, the odds of bringing the country together are good. I think Pelosi and Schumer could be his biggest challenge.

I also think the MSM does little to unify the country. Most of it is left and ridiculously biased. Fox and Newsmax are on the right but no better. Now more than ever we need a reasonable media.

I lean right and for years have not been able to stomach CNN, MSBC, etc. I now can no longer stomach Fox.

If Twitter and Facebook keep up the censoring, I'd short the stock.

MSM is not interested in unifying the country. MSM is interested in making money, which comes from increasing ratings. What better way to increase ratings than biased reporting, increase divisions and putting high paid carnival barkers on TV in prime time every night?

Social media is also a massive problem. The world was a better place before social media.

Freedom of speech is the way to eradicate. Not government suppression.

Especially term limits. Free these politicians from being beholden to the next election

Thought this was a good clip. Both sides are hypocrites, but only one gets reported on more than the other. I just wish we could end this idea that politics is a team sport. It isn't. It's about bringing people with different perspectives together to make the lives of our country's citizens better. At least it should be.

I thought you said you voted for Trump this year, but my apologies if I am confusing you with someone else. Anyway you are right, we are living in dangerous times. I agree with many posters below. All Republicans need to come and denounce Trump as well as the violence that occurred. Biden also needs to listen to Republican leaders concerns because a lot of these people became radical because they felt they were not be listened to. We have some difficult months ahead, but hopefully we can regroup on Jan 20th and get back to work.

As some posters have already stated, Biden is in a great position to create a legacy of the President that brought the country together and stops this nonsense between the parties. Unfortunately, until we have real campaign finance reform and term limits the second just won’t happen. Biden (and the Democrats) should focus on winning back working Americans instead of pandering to the radical fringe in their own party and insulting anyone who had voted for Trump previously. Best move is to ignore Trump, avoid the worthless executive orders to “undue” Trump, and rather stake out a moderate agenda that most of the country will embrace.

Obama and a Congress that had a 12% approval rating gave us Trump. The riots over the summer and at the Capital just shows there is an increasing element that are so disgusted that they’re willing to storm federal buildings, tear down statues and harm people that try to stop them. Trump is history; Congress needs to look in the mirror. It’s now what happens going forward and Biden can be the key piece in making some good happen.

He did vote for Trump from what I remember. Just because you vote for someone doesn't mean you're in lock step with that person. With what Trump has done since the election, I'm sure there are millions who regret their vote and have made it known that what happened this week is wrong.

disagree with one part. the reason trump won was because the democratic party rigged their primary to put up the abaolute worst candidate of all time. anyone other than hillary likely would have beat trump imo.

But I thought vote fraud and election rigging wasn't to be discussed?

I disagree. People absolutely hated Hillary. Bernie would not have faced that battle, and he probably wouldn't have ignored the States that Hillary took for granted.

none of it had to do with vote or election fraud? who said it cant be discussed? current claims were discussed, investigated, and found out to be false.

What evidence do you have that the 2016 primary was rigged for Hillary Clinton (outside of Trump himself saying it, which is nonsense). As we have learned in recent months, if you make an accusation like this you MUST show evidence.

I did vote for Trump against my better judgement. Even voting for him theres no way I can rationalize anything he gas done since November 3.
