David Keig might as well have had Darnell Brodie in mind when he penned his famous poem A Road Well Traveled. After all before joining the Pirate ship Brodie stopped in the ports of Newark NJ (East Side HS), Putnam CN (Putnam Science Academy), back to Newark NJ (East Side HS), and finally Montverde FL (Montverde Academy).

Brodie was a 6-10 no star (ESPN) recruit and the final player that former SHU assistant coach Fred Hill brought to South Orange. The thought being he could take a prep year, work on his game under the tutelage of the Boyle family at Montverde and then come to the Hall with an improving skill set and be a contributor down the road. A plan that is still in its infancy as the big man played sparingly despite actually starting one game as a freshmen.

Brodie has worked very hard on both his game and his body. As a scholastic player he was heavy with no definition, listed at 260 pounds but probably much closer to 280 or more. But to Brodie's credit in his one year under Kevin Boyle Jr he slimmed down and redefined his body to where he is now a legitimate and well muscled 260 pounds.

That same work ethic manifested itself in his game. In HS before spending his last season at Montverde Academy he often did not give maximum effort on the court and actually because of that came off the bench his senior season at East Side (after transferring mid year from Putnam). Something that did not bode well for a player with a scholarship to a Big East team. And probably the reason that it was suggested to him by the Hall's staff that he prep a year before coming to play for the Pirates.

The result of that decision clearly was a positive for the player as he slimmed down, muscled up and played major minutes on the Montverde Academy's graduate team. Minutes that were sorely needed in his development.

Now Brodie has that experience plus one year in college while practicing against the twin towers of Ro Gill and Ike Obiagu. Brodie didn't earn a lot of minutes on the court this season, only 55 in fact. And undoubtedly those minutes showed he needed a lot more work on his game. Work that Brodie never shied away from despite his limited PT in game action.

Moving forward it will be up to the player to show he deserves to be in the team's rotation. He's not there yet but if work ethic has anything to do with it then the possibility exists.

Based on his limited time on the court it's nearly impossible to grade the player so I think it is safe to say in year one Darnell Brodie deserves an inc.
