Wagner College head men's basketball coach Bashir Mason announced on July 7, 2017 the promotion of Donald Copeland to assistant coach.

Copeland, a former All-Big East guard at Seton Hall University before embarking on a professional playing career overseas, has spent the last two seasons as the Seahawks' graduate manager.

In each of the last two seasons, Copeland played an integral role on the Seahawk staff, helping Wagner advance to the semifinals of the 2016-17 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. In his first season at Wagner, he was part of a staff that guided Wagner to the 2015-16 NEC Tournament Championship game and a berth in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), which was highlighted by the program's first-ever postseason victory, an impressive 79-75 win at top-seeded St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Seahawks' NIT appearance in 2015-16 capped a 23-11 season, that included a 13-5 NEC mark which earned Wagner the league's regular season championship and No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Wagner finished the 2016-17 season with a 16-14 record and an 11-7 mark in conference play as the Seahawks compiled an overall record of 39-25 over Copeland's two seasons on staff, headline by an NEC mark of 24-12.

The Jersey City, NJ native, who starred at St. Anthony High School under legendary head coach Bob Hurley, Sr., arrived on Grymes Hill prior to the start of the 2015-16 campaign after enjoying a near decade-long professional career that spanned seven countries. His professional stops included:

While playing in Puerto Rico, Copeland captured two professional championships, in 2011 and 2015, with the last coming as a member of Leones de Ponce.

Before embarking on his professional career, Copeland was a standout guard at Seton Hall. While a member of the Pirates, the Garden State product helped lead the Seton Hall to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in his sophomore (2004) and senior (2006) seasons.

In helping lead the Pirates to an 18-12 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a senior in 2005-06, Copeland led the Hall in a host of statistical categories, including scoring (16.1 ppg), assists (4.5), steals (41), three-pointers (71) and free throw percentage (84.4). For the season, he ranked third in the Big East in assists per game (5.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.69).

After being named to both the All-BIG EAST and All-Metropolitan Second Teams, Copeland was tabbed as Seton Hall’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year, prior to earning his bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media Studies.

Before accepting a full scholarship at Seton Hall, Copeland played for legendary head coach Bob Hurley, Sr. at St. Anthony, helping lead the Friars to New Jersey State Championships in 2001 and 2002, with the latter team ranking No, 2 in the nation. He earned First-Team All-State and First-Team All-Tri-State honors following his senior season of 2001-02.

Copeland replaces Marquis Webb, who left the program earlier in the summer to pursue other professional career aspirations.

One of my favorite players. Someone who came to SH with a lot of doubters that he belonged in the BE who thru sheer hard work not only turned himself not only into a BE player but one who by his senior year became an All Big East player. I have no doubt he'll turn into an outstanding coach as well. Good luck Donald.

Congrats to Donald! What a great kid and terrific career he had at SHU.

Congrats Donald. Represented the school well and will continue to do so. Wish him well in his coaching career. i

As a reserve, for the most part, never did anything special but also didn't do anything to hurt us..A good sub and a outstanding player when he was the leader.

This is great news. Congratulations to Copeland.

He worked his way up as a player in a pretty remarkable way. Remember how lateral he was? It was 3PT shot off the bench or nothing with back up PG role. Then he developed into a scorer who could regularly drive-and-finish, and a leader.

Now doing the same as a coach. Good stuff.

Congratulations Donald!

I think that same drive and work ethic that enabled Donald to evolve into an all-BE point guard his Senior season provides him the necessary qualities to become a successful coach.

Donald improved as much as any player I can remember. But he did hit a few huge threes as dre turned lute's smile opside down.

Between Copeland and Bryan Caver (who is a great guy as well), these are the types of things that NJ schools need to promote more of (same for the opportunities landed by RU's Marquis Webb, while he was on Wagner's staff and Copeland who earned the chance to replace Webb at Wagner)....

It's all great to talk about the on court accomplishments, but once SHU and RU start to really promote the post career opportunities the tri-state area presents for their players who are great people, the sky is really the limit.

Fans remember not just great players, but great people and folks like Copeland are really what makes college sports great. Copeland was an easy player to root for (like Caver etc) and why I'm always going to be a fan of college sports well beyond the games etc....it's what doors can get opened for a student athlete once they graduate that really payoff in the end.

Didn't Copeland play at Rucker Park after he graduated and was a star there?

Few players at SHU ever maximized their ability more than Copeland.

The improvement in his game from his rookie year to his senior season was amazing.

Perhaps the least appreciated Pirate. If Jordan had his EQ we would all have been very happy. And no disrespect to Jordan who had great heart and skill.

Wonderful news. Are you talking about Theodore? As I understand he is having a successful pro career on the court
