Seton Hall has a real chance to make some noise if they can sustain this level of play.
The defense has moments where they can be exploited, but for the most part they are a solid defensive team. They still need to improve moving forward. Outside of the Creighton game the Pirates have been good enough on defense to win most of the games they've played.
The offense is kind of up and down. At times they look real good and the it seems to be getting better. They certainly have had their moments. We all realize that it is more of a structured freelance offense and not a true system offense as compared to teams like Creighton and Villanova.
Last night was a roller coaster ride for the Pirates. Early on we had some success in the paint. Then Desi exploded with several 3 point shots. Towards the end of the Half it was the Carrington Show. In the 2nd half IW took over the game. Obviously, Villanova made adjustments, but we never had everyone contributing at the same time.
Last night seemed to be a great teaching tool for the players and the coach also. In fact they kind of struggled to score in the last segment of the Providence game, but Carrington was hitting his free throws.
Moving forward we can't just be a guard only offense down the stretch. The guards have to keep their composure, have a better idea of both the shot and game clock and find the player who has the best opportunity to score. They're not trusting Desi and Angel enough. You don't force the ball to anyone unless they have a quality look. When the defense on the opposing teams is elevated then going into the paint becomes more difficult for IW, Carrington or Gordon. Certainly they are all capable of driving and dishing.
I also believe that Kevin has to find a way to use Singh in these situations. At minimum he could be after a couple of tough minutes is counter productive if you need him later on in the game. This is the guy you recruited to hit outside shots. He is a threat and I'd rather see the guards dish to him if he's wide open down the stretch for a quality look instead of forcing crazy shots.
I guess he could come in for Gordon in those specific offense defense situations. Having some set plays that you can use with timeouts is something to consider. Last night they had 3 chances to call a timeout and set something up. Another poster mentioned today that we had the same problem in the last minutes of regulation against Wichita St.
The bottom line is that although the college game is more guard friendly the frontcourt must somehow be involved last portion of the game. Our frontcourt players also have a responsibility to make sure they pass the ball if they don't have a good attempt either. I believe all three of our guards have good intentions and are not selfish. They just need to not panic and consider their best option.
This thread is really about enhancing this season's offense with the roster that is in place????
