ESPN cost cutting

Surprised about Jeff Van Gundy and Susie Klober.

Not with the aav they were getting...at a point in time espn was bringing in $7 per cable/satellite subscriber...about 100 million of those per month...$7 100m x 12 is about 8.5 billion before they sold one ad spot for any live event

Espn now has a woke management team that just buried its audience

I'm not sure how this line of thinking lends to why they did it but when invoking the most overused word in the world today, I think you need to specify as to why a company let go of so many people that the "woke" audience loves.

I can understand the contracts that they gave out for live event commentary as they had competition there, but for the life of me, I never understood why they would give out those sizeable contracts to studio show hosts save a few. I don't think the infusion of political points of view commenting on sporting events helped them, but the biggest issue I always saw was the exorbitant contracts they handed out in situations where they were essentially bidding against themselves.

The money is insane. They have over paid so much for these studio hosts and commentators. It’s ridiculous. There’s probably a line of people ready to take those jobs for a fraction of the money that would do the job just as well. Who really tunes in ESPN to listen to a talking head? All you really care about is the content and highlights.

As but they are talent of a certain niche

It's obvious. They alienated half of their customer base by pushing nonsense &
by making the on air personalities bigger than the product. Serious question. Do you think anyone watches ESPN because of Mike Greenberg or watched it because of Suzy Kolber or Keyshawn Johnson? Their salaries are ridiculous based on what they bring to the table.

Watching sports talk shows on ESPN over the years I can’t overstate how many times I’ve said to myself ” how could they hire this person they bring nothing to the table “ and then you find out how much they’re making and allyou can do is shake your head in wonderment.

Significantly over priced talent.
There are two ranges here...one signing analysts that have name recognition that can complement and enhance studio or game coverage. Van Gundy/Rose etc brought great experience and perspective to the table IMHO. Being a sports anchor in a high profile setting is something thousands seek and very few attain. You are under hot set lights and need to perform without blemish at a moment's notice. Media production is something where a botch will easily be noticed by the viewing public. You are worth/valued as much as an employer is willing to pay.

If you are a Giants, Jets or Eagles fan, you are tuning in to watch your team play whether a “name” is doing the play-by-play and color or a nobody that makes mistakes. Sportscasters may enhance the quality of the broadcast, but they have zero impact on ratings and sponsorships.

On air botches? Bill Walton is on hold…I’m infinitely more worried about a doctor, nurse, pilot or even an Uber driver botching their job.

I compare this to fine dining. Do you feel fine dining is overpriced?

But the sourced product does...60 day dry age wet age usda prime or even waygu will cost you just like premium tv talent
The product is the game…paying the players a premium.

Announcers are overhead. No impact on ratings or revenue.

No clue on his salary, but to me, Brean sucks too. Van Gundy is the only interesting listen. But you know ESPN Baldists!

Firing someone you overpaid in the first place for making too much money is pretty pathetic. Some of these people were good at their jobs and quite loyal for many years to ESPN. The people running the company need to go for mishandling their employees!

Then look further. I often noted to keep the conversation as it relates to sports.

Both topics have the potential to turn political and that is not tolerated on the board and the reason we have LOTS.

Earlier this year Disney announced a plan to cut 7,000 jobs to save $5.5 billion and the cuts we’re seeing at ESPN are a part of that. How much of hysteria $5.5 billion will come from ESPN is yet to come.

And ESPN just signed Pat Mcafee at a reputed $17 million a year , which has you wondering how they expect to reach their goal.

They made a content aquistion not a talent acquisition

ESPN followed a similar path to mainstream news. People get the news from their phone nowadays. To adapt the the news outlets put less focus on news and more focus on controversial entertainment as a way to keep audiences. People like drama.

That still doesn’t work long term. I have no idea how anyone watches ESPN or Fox Sports aside from live sports. As a grown man I could care less what the opinion of my team is from some schmo.

I’d rather listen to a podcast that focuses on my team and gives actual insight.

Am I mistaken or were you the OP on the trans athlete issue with a provocative headline ?
Which they haven't done. I would love to hear some evidence of that.
they have had a few on air personalities air far left views. That has no place in sport’s broadcasting. https://www.foxnews.com/sports/espn-woke-moments-america-bashing-july-4-china

The death of saint George Floyd was covered at length by ESPN, conservative Major League Baseball players have been criticized for religious views, and ESPN even had a moment of silence to protest Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill. Let’s not forget the praise of Kaepernick
