ESPN star defends Woj after '@#$% you' email to US senator

What a Woj bomb: ESPN star emails '@#$% you' to US Senator

Woj’s F-bomb has led to an unpaid suspension, The Post has learned.

ESPN has scrapped NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski’s trip to Orlando this week to report from the NBA bubble, according to sources, after he responded to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) with an email that read

Hawley had initiated the exchange by sending a mass letter criticizing NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the league’s relationship with China.

ESPN declined comment, though their actions will likely become obvious this week when the ultra-prominent Wojnarowski is not on the air. The end point of Wojnarowski’s suspension, if that has been defined, is not yet known.

The site Outkick first reported that Wojnarowoski had been suspended.

For years now, Wojnarowski, first at Yahoo and now at ESPN, has been the top news breaker in the NBA. His signature reporting of moves ahead of his competition have become known as “Woj Bombs” on Twitter.

On Friday, Hawley, 40, posted a screenshot of Wojnarowski’s email, tweeting, “Don’t criticize #China or express support for law enforcement to @espn. It makes them real mad.”

Wojnarowski, 51, apologized soon after.

“I was disrespectful and I made a regrettable mistake,” Wojnarowski said in a statement. “I’m sorry for the way I handled myself and I am reaching out immediately to Senator Hawley to apologize directly. I also need to apologize to my ESPN colleagues because I know my actions were unacceptable and should not reflect on any of them.”

ESPN, meanwhile, described Wojnarowski’s email as “completely unacceptable,” “inexcusable” and said they would address it directly with Wojnarowski, but the specifics will remain “internal.”

Some NBA players and ESPN personnel have come to Wojnarowski’s defense. The Clippers’ Lou Williams tweeted “Aye #Freewoj man,” adding two crying laughing emojis. Williams’ teammate, Patrick Beverly followed the tweet with, “Till it’s backwards” and two prayer emojis.

ESPN’s Maria Taylor tweeted her support of Wojnarowski earlier, saying she would always stand with him.

With the NBA camps reopening at Disney World and games set to resume at the end of the month, the league has authorized messages that the players can wear instead of their names to support social justice. Those include, “Equality,” “Black Lives Matter, “Vote” and “I Can’t Breathe.”

However, commentary on China is excluded from the list. In October, the league dealt with the fallout of Rockets GM Daryl Morey’s tweet — “Stand with Hong Kong.” The Chinese government canceled NBA games and events set to take place in the country.

In Hawley’s letter to Silver, the senator questioned why “Free Hong Kong” was not included for the jerseys, saying “free expression appears to stop at the edge of your corporate sponsor sensibilities.”

Wojnarowski used his free expression to respond to Hawley — and now ESPN has benched him and taken away his paycheck.

Never a fan of his and I am not sure how he went from a Record sports columnist who did a book on Bob Hurley (and book tour with him) to yahoo sports and then basically the NBA insider with ESPN. He seems to have his found his niche.

Not a great time for a sports reporter to be looking for a new job. He’ll be delivering our pea pod orders by next week.

He has deep and diverse sources among clubs, leagues, colleges, grassroots.

so every time I watch an NBA game ill be reminded on the vilification of police? How about a patch for south side of Chicago lives
no thanks wont watch a minute of it
LeBron might be having a “Republicans buy sneakers too” moment. He will not be wearing a patch. Apparently this doesn’t fit his mission.

Woj is great at what he does and his Hurley book is an all-time favorite of mine, but that response to a US senator was beneath him. It also reinforces why many folks distrust of the media has now moved beyond the social/political news sphere and into the sports sector. If the person that wrote that email had a “D” in front of their title, Woj wouldn’t have responded like that, regardless of the question. And that’s a problem.

That's a stretch. Can you provide some information to support this?
I have no clue why he won't wear a patch. He didn't speak up against China. I'm guessing the money is talking here. Or maybe his private security is cops and he didn't want to piss them off. Who knows? It just seems odd he is very big on social justice but doesn't see this as a good fit for his mission.

He didn’t speak up against China. He feigned to not know why millions would be in the street protesting. He’s a fairly smart guy so I think by process of elimination it was very likely the $$$$

WOJ felt comfortable doing it because Hawley is a R from a flyover state. Surely Adrian is smarter and better informed than this yahoo with degrees from Stanford and Yale.

Not like the NFL did anything to Cooper Riley when he went on his n-word rant 7 years ago. Players and media quite different.
Like my parents always said two wrongs don’t make a right . IMO both handled terribly but the lack of outrage and the amount of support Jackson is getting blows my mind( even though it shouldn’t).

Anyone who doesn't wear a social justice message isn't going to be ostracized, whether its Lebron or Michael Beasley or JJ Redick. He's arguably the most outspoken athlete in the NBA so i don't think he needs to wear it. His social media and being the 1st to get the microphone amplifies his mission more.

I say good for ESPN. That's the problem today. The media thinks their $#!t dont stink and that they're invincible.

Well, Woj should have known better. Even though he went at this Senator as a "citizen" (let's remember this was an email, not a tweet), he's in the public eye and actually played into this political play.

But I wonder if you'd be this adamant if you agreed with the politics.

I wonder where Woj would be if he agreed with my politics. The idea that black lives matter is 100% true. The organization black lives matter is a marxist group. Where would Woj be if he agreed with my politics? Same spot? I hope sure hope so, but my gut says no. My guess is his sources wouldn't want anything to do with him if he came out and put those ideas to paper and he would be out of work.

Agree with the politics? This is all about the way China treats Hong Kong and commits human rights violations against its own people. There really aren’t multiple sides to this one.

Since you feel so strongly about this, you're boycotting all Chinese manufactured products, correct? As I'm sure the good Senator is?

Should have been fired, as any of us would have been had we wrote a work email like that.

His talent and contributions can not be considered "as any of us". The more talented you are, the more leeway you get.

But... he should have known better...

My point is the NFL doesn’t handle anything well. And it won’t begin with punishment against a black player in this climate right now, whether you agree or disagree. NFL has notoriously closed their eyes to everything until there is a backlash too great to stay silent on (like the wife beating history and the concussion history, which only got responses due to outside pressure).

For what it’s worth, there are fellow players who do not agree:

The response to Riley was absolutely appalling, but the way. It should all start with recognition on both sides and not just comparing two evils against each other.

Charles Barkley: Sports’ social-justice statements becoming a ‘circus’

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley asserted that sports leagues and players have turned racial injustice issues into a “circus,” placing more importance on who’s kneeling or what message is written on a player’s jersey rather than making real change.

“What’s happening now is we’re turning into a circus,” Barkley said Friday in a guest appearance on CNBC. “Instead of talking about racial equality, racial justice and economic justice, we spend all our time worrying about who’s kneeling and not kneeling, what things are being said on buses, what’s being said on jerseys. I think we’re missing the point.

“We need police reform, prison reform. Those are No. 1 and No. 2 things to focus on. We need the cops, good cops out there policing bad cops. … When we spend time focusing on what’s on the jersey, that’s gonna defeat purpose. My concern is this is turning into a circus instead of trying to do some good stuff.”

Last week, the NBA announced that players playing in the Orlando “bubble” will be allowed to wear pre-approved social justice-related messages in place of their last names on the back of their jerseys. Phrases like, “Black Lives Matter,” “I Can’t Breathe” and “Equality” are some examples.

Barkley, an analyst for Turner Sports, is concerned that the promotion of such social justice messages could turn off fans looking from an escape from the real world.

“We are in a divided country,” Barkley said. “Sports used to be a place where fans could go and get away from reality. Now it’s such a mixture. It’s going to be fascinating watching what happens with the fans. Fans are at a disadvantage, they’re going through the pandemic. They don’t want to see a bunch of rich people talking about stuff all the time. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer.

“People lost jobs and the last thing they want to do is turn on the television to hear arguments about stuff all the time. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the public reacts.”

I agree. I think there should be more attention to Jackson’s idiocy and more op/ed’s with player support.

Let’s see how this one ages and the “support” Jackson’s gotten is still there a year or two from now. NFL has a chance here to start a new chapter on what they’ll tolerate.

Unfortunately we don’t have a choice in most instances, which is kind of the problem. Even so, isn’t all of this stuff based on raising awareness more so than hard actions? The more ways that people catch on to what China is up to, and how the NBA makes loads of money off that country, the better.

BTW - Even if I’m stuck with Chinese manufactured products, I’m not making money off of them like the NBA is. That’s a rather big difference.

Shu09 weeks ago on lots you strongly felt if any one person used social media as a tool to profess hate against any race, gender, sexual orienation, religion that is their preference and any workplace is infringing on their rights if they option to terminate that person, now you are saying a high ranking contracted individual should be fired for an awful two word reply to a us senator. I agree he has a terrible lapse in judgment and maturity. I am sure he will have to do a course after studying the disney handbook.
