Heading into the all-important July recruiting period, we take a look at recruiting needs and game plans for the top 25 programs in college basketball. First up, the Creighton Bluejays.

i
Where they are: No one could have predicted that just two years after Doug McDermott departed Omaha, the Bluejays would be back in the top 25. But Greg McDermott has done it -- primarily via the transfer route. Maurice Watson Jr. (Boston University) and Cole Huff (Nevada) made immediate impacts a year ago, and Kansas State transfer Marcus Foster will be eligible this season after sitting out a year ago. Foster had a terrific freshman season under coach Bruce Weber, but struggled as a sophomore and will try to take advantage of a second chance. Creighton loses two contributors in big man Geoffrey Groselle (11.2 points, 6.1 rebounds per game) and James Milliken (9.7 ppg), but Foster will be an upgrade over Milliken, and McDermott is hoping talented redshirt freshman Justin Patton is ready to step in and help this year. The 7-foot-1 Patton is skilled and versatile and hails from Omaha. Creighton also has senior shooter Isaiah Zierden back, as well as fellow guard Khyri Thomas -- who will look to build on a solid freshman campaign. The lone two newcomers are Syracuse transfer Kaleb Joseph, who will sit this season, and freshman guard Davion Mintz.

Where they’re going: The Bluejays are already in great shape in the Class of 2017 with three verbal commitments, including a pair ranked in the ESPN 60. McDermott & Co., received a pledge from 6-3 wing scorer Ty-Shon Alexander (No. 43) last October to get things started. Alexander is a North Carolina native who chose Creighton over multiple ACC schools. He’ll join 6-5 lefty Mitchell Ballock (No. 42) -- a Kansas prospect who was on Kansas’ radar before choosing Creighton. They will be joined by 6-foot-10 Hunter Thompson, a Wyoming native who fits Creighton’s style because of his skill level and ability to shoot it at his size. With a four-man senior class (Watson, Huff, Zierden and Zach Hanson) and one open scholarship, the Bluejays could still add two more but will likely hold one for a transfer.

Top targets: Because the Bluejays have two wings and a big man and they want to keep one of the two remaining scholarships for a transfer, the priority now is a forward with size. The targets include ESPN 60 prospect Brian Bowen (No. 26), a 6-8 wing who plays at La Lumiere School in Indiana and has ties to Creighton assistant Preston Murphy from their Saginaw, Michigan roots. Others on the radar: 6-8 Wyatt Wilkes from Winter Park, Florida, Christian David, a 6-7 Canadian who plays at Vermont Academy and 6-5 Brandon Rachal, who hails from Natchitoches, Louisiana.
