Five Years Ago Today

Such a fun game to attend. Calipari was freaking out because we just kept coming back and matching them and our intensity was off the charts. I would put that game up there with some of the great Pirate wins. Not sure why but it reminds me of when we beat Ohio State on New Year's day. Fun times.

Wow, time flies. Powell was unreal in that second half.

On a side note, FOX graphics have gotten worse since then. A lot simpler and more visually appealing back then.

At about 4:10 into that clip, Gus Johnson: "Powell, he can score points in bunches, keep that in mind" as Myles dribble drove and then hit an 18-foot jumper. Those were his fifth and sixth points of the game.

Talk about a first guess. From that point over the last 10:15 of regulation, Myles was 6-7 overall, 5-5 on threes and 2-2 on free throws. 19 points in all.

Gus wore out "Trenton makes, the world takes" that afternoon.

This game was all time insane. so glad i was there. so much going on:
  • this game had at lest 6/7 guys who played games in the NBA. top tier squads
  • MSG neutral site was 50/50 that day and was one of the most juiced events there in a long time
  • PJ washington was essentially unstoppable
  • TT is a complete enigma and i still dont know the entirety of his story. such a weird player. he was effective that night doing things that visually looked so awkward. his decision to pass at the end was great.
  • This was PEAK myles powell shooting. no hesitation. just an absolute stud
  • looking back PJ Washington might have stepped on the line on the inbound pass at the end of regulation
  • our guys could have been zapped of emotions after that buzzerbeater, but to start OT i think Ant Nelson actually took the ball to the rim that sort of set the tone that the team wasnt backing down
An all time game.

Best sporting event I’ve attended in my life. Amazing atmosphere. Amazing game. I remember walking out of MSG absolutely amped and being surrounded by a thousand Santas dressed up for SantaCon. Everything was electric. Good times.
Lucky you for being there. Unbelievable game. I had volunteered and canvassed for Antonio Delgado that fall as he won a congressional seat up here in the Hudson Valley. He hosted a luncheon that afternoon to thank his volunteers. I didn’t want to miss a chance to meet a congressman and get a free lunch, so I set the DVR and went on my merry way. All during the lunch, my phone was blowing up in my pocket as my boss at the time kept texting me: “Are you watching this? I can’t believe this”. Etc
I went home; poured a drink; and enjoyed the replay. Two interesting side notes. Antonio Delgado, who is now NY Lt Governor, was not a bad player in his own right as a teammate of Adonil Foyle at Colgate. My boss was a huge Kentucky fan because his dad had played for KY in the 60’s alongside Pat Riley and under Adolph Rupp.
Good lord I am old.

Best game we have seen in person. MSG was insane. These guys were (mostly) fun to watch.
Amazing game. We were there in a sea of blue - sandwiched in between Kentucky fans - Powell and the whole team amazing. Taurean at the foul line to start that passing sequence that wound up in Cales's hands for the amazing 3-point shot.

Give Willard credit as a coach - did a great job preparing the team and getting the best out of every player.

Funniest thing is at the 1:50 mark. McKnight throws a bounce pass intended for a cutting Cale, who gets cut off by Reid Travis. The ball continues slowly bouncing and finds its way out to a wide open Thompson, who makes a three.

One of the most fun games MSG ever. One of the best Hall games at MSG ever. I won't go far as saying it was one of the "most juiced" MSG events when you consider it is MSG, but for the Hall fan it was definitely in my top 2 or 3.

Watching the replays reminded me how insane Powell was that game. His 3 to put us up 3 in regulation was such a challenging shot to make.

TT's best game ever in a Pirate uniform. Watching those highlights again, the writing perhaps should have been on the wall, because some of those shots he hit were low efficiency, difficult to make and he looked 4 steps slow just doing it, yet he was getting them to fall.

Cale was also huge that game, beyond the big 3 in OT.

That Kentucky team was loaded. When you look at the roster you realize how many future pros they had playing in that game. They were young and we caught them at the right time. The highlights also reminded me that Cal brought in Reid Travis that year -- who was an older, experienced, real solid big at Stanford -- to try and help the learning curve with his talented young players.

Omg so many good points I won’t repeat them all…but some have to be:

Great atmosphere and win in an iconic arena! Best ever? No…the Big East championships bear this but…this was electric

Myles Powell…I am fully aware of recent events…but let’s be honest, few players inject the kind of excitement and energy into a game that Myles did. And…boy did he deliver.

I too was amidst Kentucky fans…and to say they felt like victory was a foregone conclusion might be an understatement.

Then again…. After that half court heave by Kentucky tied the game…I, like many Hall fans I’m sure, felt like, here we go again.

Just goes to show how you can easily become accustomed to losing…or winning.

In either case…what a great game

The Kentucky fans were so high and mighty from the start of the game. They couldn’t believe we even had a chance to beat them. It was great when we won to see their smug faces.
I sat right behind a Kentucky fan, his daughter and a couple of their friends. The guy was pretty nice and we made some conversation for most of the game.

There were a group of younger Seton Hall fans sitting further up in the section that were more intent on giving UK the business than anything else which got this guy going. So, he was less friendly the last 10 minutes of the game (he was cool with me personally).

When Powell hit the shot at the end of regulation, he turned to me and stuck out his hand to congratulate me. Meanwhile the group behind us started up again and things escalated a bit. Look story short, he was escorted out after Keldon Johnson's half-court three tied the game.

It was my first weekend in my new home with my soon to be wife. I wasn’t too excited to leave my family and friends and I had not yet met any of the new neighbors.
You get one chance to make a first impression, and I’m a very loud and passionate sports fan. This was a great day I will not forget anytime soon. Being a semi superstitious fan, I immediately loved the new house.

A lot of memorable games once Willard got things going.
#1. BET championship game vs NOVA
#2. Kentucky game
#3. BET semi final win vs Marquette In 2019. If you were at this one you know what I mean!

I never understood the need to get on opposing fans. I mean, really? Even when I was younger. And beyond Seton Hall basketball, I've been to dozens of Yankees/Red Sox, Giants/Eagles, Giants/Cowboys, Knicks/Heat, Knicks/Pacers games in person, all when those rivalries were at their peak. Still never done it. To each their own, but I just don't get the need to harass someone else in public who is there watching a game.

5 years later and Nothing about the TT situation has made the least bit of sense

Without knowing about his personal demons, the only thing that made sense for me in rewatching those highlights is that he was vastly overrated by me coming here. Because of the pedigree and him coming from Cuse, I thought we were getting an all league player. Even watching that replay - his best game - he looked athletically and skill wise like a fish out of water.
