South Orange, N.J. – Myles Powell, a four-star recruit from Trenton, N.J., who is on the ESPN top 100 list for Class of 2016 student-athletes, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seton Hall men’s basketball team beginning in Fall 2016, head coach Kevin Willard announced Thursday.
Powell’s signing is another example of the Seton Hall coaching staff’s ability to keep top local talent near home. The current Pirates team has seven of 13 scholarship student-athletes hailing from either New Jersey or New York City.
“We are very excited to welcome Myles into the Seton Hall Basketball family,” Willard said. “Myles has a tremendous shooting ability, and he also can beat his defenders off the dribble. He is a terrific young man who will fit in very well in our program and at the University.
“We are very committed to keeping the best local talent close to home, and we’re very proud that Myles has chosen to continue his academic and basketball education here at Seton Hall.”
Powell will come to South Orange as a highly touted prospect, especially after a big summer on the AAU circuit led to increased interest from other institutions. In addition to ranking in the ESPN Top 100, he is rated the third-best recruit in the state of New Jersey. According to ESPN’s scouting report, “Powell is one of the best three-point shooters in the country. He's virtually automatic when his feet are set and already owns range out to the NBA arc.”
Powell is currently attending the South Kent School and will play for head coach Kelvin Jefferson. He previously attended Trenton Catholic High School, where he played for head coach Fred Falchi and averaged 17 points as a junior and 18.5 points as a sophomore. In 2014-15, he had a pair of 29-point games, including a 29-point game vs. St. Benedict’s that featured seven three-pointers made. In 2013-14, he had a career-high 36 points against Moorestown and connected on a career-high eight three-pointers against Pennsbury as part of a 32-point game.
Powell also played his AAU basketball for NJ Playaz under head coach Jimmy Salmon, averaging over 18 points a game this past summer, including an outstanding performance at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam, where he averaged 19.8 points. He also won this past summer’s three-point shooting contest at the Big Strick Classic in the Bronx. Notable NJ Playaz alumni include NBA All-Stars Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Kyle Lowry and former Pirates Fuquan Edwin and Eddie Griffin.
While Powell will join the team for the 2016-17 season, the 2015-16 team is set to open the regular season Friday vs. Dartmouth at Prudential Center at 7 p.m. The Pirates return BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic), BIG EAST All-Rookie Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.), fellow sophomores Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn,N.Y.) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) while adding in graduate transfers Braeden Anderson (Okotoks, Alberta) and Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) as well as a strong freshman class, headlined by Veer Singh (New York, N.Y.).
