QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2019) – The St. John’s men’s basketball team will kick off its first BIG EAST season under the direction of Head Coach Mike Anderson on New Year’s Eve at Carnesecca Arena against Butler at 7:30 p.m., the conference office announced this afternoon.
The Red Storm’s league opener against the Bulldogs will be one of just three conference games in Queens, as the Johnnies will play six regular season BIG EAST contests at Madison Square Garden, “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” The Johnnies last played six conference games at The Garden in 2014-15, a stretch that saw them go 5-1 en route to 21 wins and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The release of the conference schedule coincides with the reveal of the Red Storm’s complete television lineup for the upcoming season. All but one of the Johnnies’ regular season games will be nationally televised with four games airing on CBS or FOX. The opening contest of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun, pitting the Johnnies against Arizona State in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Tournament tilt, will air exclusively on ESPN3.
After ringing in the New Year against Butler, a team that St. John’s has knocked off three straight years in Queens, the Red Storm will hit the road for a pair of contests beginning with a Jan. 5 tilt against Xavier on FOX. The Johnnies will next travel to the nation’s capital, taking on Georgetown inside Capital One Arena on Jan. 8.
The Red Storm will next host DePaul at noon on Saturday, Jan. 11, for its BIG EAST Madison Square Garden debut, kicking off a stretch of four consecutive home games in Midtown. The contest will mark the fourth time overall and the first time since 2014 that St. John’s and the Blue Demons have met at MSG as conference foes during the regular season.
Following a Wednesday showdown with the Friars in Providence on Jan. 15, the Red Storm will return to Midtown for a second straight Saturday, taking on cross-river rival Seton Hall on Jan. 18 at 12 p.m. on FOX. The two charter BIG EAST members split their regular season series a year ago, including an eight-point victory for the Johnnies at “The Mecca.”
A Midwest swing awaits the Johnnies after their meeting with Seton Hall, as the Red Storm will roll into Milwaukee for a contest with Marquette on Jan. 21 before taking on DePaul in The Windy City on Jan. 25.
After squaring off with the Golden Eagles and Blue Demons, the Red Storm will entertain a pair of traditional BIG EAST rivals in back-to-back games at “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” The Johnnies will play host to Villanova on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 28, before welcoming Georgetown to MSG on Feb. 2, Super Bowl Sunday afternoon, at 1 p.m. on CBS. The last time the Red Storm squared off with the Wildcats in Midtown, the Johnnies erased a 19-point first-half deficit to come back and down the defending national champs. LJ Figueroa led the way with a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double in that affair.
The Johnnies will play Creighton for the first time on Saturday, Feb. 8, traveling to CHI Health Center Omaha for a showdown with the Bluejays. Tip-off time for that contest has yet to be determined. Last year, the Johnnies picked up their first ever win against Creighton in Omaha and secured a regular season sweep behind 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from Shamorie Ponds.
The Red Storm will then return to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena for the first time in more than a month, playing host to Providence on Feb. 12 at 8:30 p.m. The Johnnies wrap up the two-game home swing with a Presidents’ Day tilt against Xavier at Madison Square Garden. That contest is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
A pair of short return road trips will then await the Johnnies, as the Red Storm will take on Seton Hall at Prudential Center on Feb. 23 before facing off with defending BIG EAST Champion Villanova at The Finneran Pavilion on Feb. 26. The game with the Pirates, which is set to tip at 2 p.m., will air on CBS.
The Red Storm will then play two of their final three regular games at home, welcoming Creighton to Carnesecca Arena on March 1 at noon before heading to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse for a contest with Butler on March 4.
The Johnnies will then close out the regular season at Madison Square Garden with a Saturday afternoon showdown against Marquette on March 7.
