Just saw that on April 5, Providence College had a fund raiser by the name of Friars Give. The goal was to have 3,989 alumni (it’s the current number of PC undergrads) donate on that day. I just read they had over 4500 alumni donate and they raised over 1.2MM that day. Pretty crazy that our schools donations absolutely pale in comparison to this and other Big East schools. Our son is going to be a Freshman at PC this year. I have to say the amount of school spirit both undergrads and alumni have for their school is off the charts. I hope our son enjoys his time up there. It really appears to be a special place. They are also building a basketball only practice facility that will be finished by this fall. I do know they have a few alumni that are large donors one being the Ruane family which the facility is being named after.

While the schools are similar in many ways, this is a huge difference between them and it comes down to what you said: school spirit.

When I was a student at Seton Hall, I felt like I was one of very few sports fans there. You'd ask somebody about the basketball team or a recent game and get a clueless or dismissive look in response. I can't put my finger on why that is, but it does seem to have changed for the better over the last 10 years.

I don't know the demographics of Providence. Does it draw a lot of students from the immediate area like Seton Hall does? Are most of them commuters? Maybe that has something to do with it. The perception I got about Seton Hall from other peers at that time was nothing special. A few people from your high school class would go there, but it wasn't one of the more popular choices despite being local. It was a long time ago now, but it seems the perception at my high school was that Seton Hall was a lot like FDU, Montclair, Kean, Ramapo, Rowan, William Paterson, Caldwell and Drew. Decent local options not named Rutgers, but nothing special. It seemed to me that you either went away to a national name brand school or stayed local at Rutgers. Only a handful went to SH and the other local schools.

Providence has become a hot school to attend. Much harder to get into than it used to be. #1 in in the 2017 ranking of “Best Colleges – Regional Universities – North from US News and World Report. Everyone knows those rankings get gamed big time but all the schools are trying to game them and Providence is doing a good job. The city has really changed too in the last 15-20 years. Used to be a total dump and now its very nice and they do cool stuff like getting together around the river each year and they send these burning wreaths down the river (Waterfire events). Good restaurants too and easy access from highways and Amtrak. They have it going on and Friar alum donations have been going up each year in an impressive fashion. SHU is just not in the same league on the donation front unfortunately. I truly believe that while Sheeran was a very nice guy, he did very little for SHU for way too long and we will forever be behind. Bad leadership who did not know how to play the game set SHU back for years. The next Pres hiring is extremely important for us. Gabe was great but there is a lot to do.

But someone has to tell Providence to fix the Dunk ASAP!

SHU09 - 65% of the students are from the New England area, 25% are from the NJ/PA/NY/MD/VA area. This year they had the most applications with 11,200 applications but they only take 1050 students. Less than 3% of the students are commuters so I’m sure that plays a role in the donating as well. With SH having a much higher percentage of students that commute, if I had to guess not many commuters donate to our school as they don’t feel as much of a part of the school.

The PC campus is only 2 miles from downtown Providence. The 2 miles in between is not a great area but with Uber its easy to get to and from. I’ve heard the same thing about the city being much improved over the last 15-20 years. Restaurants are great as well. As for the campus, it is much bigger than the SH campus and has open feel to it. It’s not tiny like the SH campus nor is it overwhelming. Previously they had an upper campus and lower campus but with terrific engineering and foresight it all now blends into one campus. Fr Shanley (Pres of the school) is loved by the school and let’s just say he gets it big time. The school spirit is incredible and anytime we’ve been up there so many of the students are wearing PC gear. They have a Top 10-15 recruiting class for hoops, a new basketball only facility that will be completed by the fall, the hockey team is ranked in the Top 10 the last few years (they won the championship in 2015) and a couple of years ago they made it to the Final 4 in soccer. I’ve heard they have a terrific alumni network too and that they really do try to take care of their fellow Friars.

I do. Seton Hall is No 1 for me and I always bleed blue and donate to Pirate Blue since it’s my Alma mater and PC has always been No 2 for me. I’ll continue to “route” for them. Thanks

I was kidding. I figured my over the top caps lock would give it away. I always root for Providence and always happy to hear the school is thriving.

I usually get your sarcasm and enjoy your posts. Didn’t get it this time. Swing and a miss by me. I think I remember you posting that you went up to Providence for the SH/PC game this year.

I went to PC only once, in 2003 when we lost a very tough one on the last day of the regular season in overtime. One of my few superstitions is SH road games. We have never played well when I've gone to a road game, our record is 4-12 when I'm in attendance. I've only been to four road games in the last eight years, including this year at Villanova. I figured we didn't have anything to lose in that one. :)

Exactly Tommy.

We had 862 donors and something like $141k for our Giving Day yesterday. It’s a start. I was at the Senior Banquet on Monday night and Dr Mary Meehan spoke and mentioned our donation rate of 8% and that it needs to change. She said I’m not looking for Villanova type numbers of 27% but that she would like to see us at 10%.

10% wow that's asking a lot from our donors. Don't see that ever happening. We are not Providence and certainly nowhere near being Villanova, Gtown or BC.

It’s been noted on other posts that SH has the lowest percentage of donors amongst all the BE schools.

Just to be clear, by 10% they mean 10% of the alumni give something in a given year. It could be as little as $10 but it counts in the statistic.

Top schools are around 60%.

They don't mean that alumni give 10% of their income.

they need to get creative....Something like if you go to the Alumni event down the shore the entrance fee is considered a donation. This is an easy way to inflate the numbers.

This doesn't have to do with Seton Hall or Providence, per se, but I would recommend Malcolm Gladwell's podcast, "This American Life." One podcast deals directly with donations to Universities, and why hedge fund billionaires choose to lavish $100mil+ gifts on Universities that can live well on their endowments alone. It contrasts this to Henry Rowan, who gave Glassboro State $150mil to start a school of engineering. Good stuff:

Just got the Seton Hall magazine for the Spring of 2018. I see where President Meehan has started a campaign of “Get to 10.” With the idea that by the end of June 30 we will have 5,114 graduates donate. This is the first I’ve seen of this. I feel like this should have been advertised in a much broader fashion. It’s a great idea.

And if you never ask and you never try, you never will! That's the type of defeatist attitude that have our alumni giving in the toilet. Too many people afraid of success!

We need to poach the president of Nova or PC unless Dr. Meehan somehow considers the position. The new president will then have to clean house of the negative Nellies who are happy sitting around doing nothing and saying we can't!

As of last night - May 21-we are at 9% individual donor participation rate. Need another 500 new donors by June 30 to get to 10%.
