WASHINGTON -- George Washington University is dropping its "Colonials" moniker because "it can no longer serve its purpose as a name that unifies," the school announced Wednesday.

GW will keep using Colonials until a new name is introduced. That is expected by the 2023-24 academic year.

"A moniker must unify our community, draw people together and serve as a source of pride," said Grace Speights, chair of the university's board of trustees. "We look forward to the next steps in an inclusive process to identify a moniker that fulfills this aspiration."

The school has used the nickname since 1926.

A special committee looked into the name's history and delivered a report to the school president in March 2021.

According to an online statement from the university, the committee determined that supporters of the Colonials moniker view it as referring to "those who lived in the American colonies, especially those who fought for independence and democracy," while opponents see the term as referring to "colonizers who stole land and resources from indigenous groups, killed or exiled Native peoples and introduced slavery into the colonies."

This is a correct move. The colonial practices and policies of Great Britain and other countries were oppressive. These are part and parcel of why Americans revolted 250 years ago.

This is hysterical. No they are hysterical. Let's just change history if a group wasn't 100% perfect. Their actions also helped found our country.

I guess they don't have a very good history department or appreciation for history at GW. Lookout the school name is next.

i agree its a dumb name to begin with (how bout generals? patriots?)

but wow what a mundane team name going down haha

But colonials simply represents the colonists and their rugged experience in building a new nation.

If they were called colonialists, then that would be another matter.

This wokeness has gotten out of hand.

Won't be long until Pirates are on the chopping block. Any suggestions for our new Mascot? SHU Saints? Wait that may offend others of different faiths. Butterflies? Hmmm...may get in trouble with PETA. I'm stumped.
Not if you copy Siena and use a Saint Bernard. That excludes other dog breeds though, so they should probably change again. That should also go for UConn, Butler, Georgia, etc.

In all seriousness though, Pirates should be safe. Disney's romanticized piracy enough that the actual horrors of piracy aren't the first things people associate with the name. As long as there's no pre-game wench auction, we should be good lol.

Actually, a colonial is a native or inhabitant of a colony.

A colony is a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country.

In general, people are ok with the term colonial because they ended up on the winning end. The native end probably thinks different.

Some of the native tribes were colonials in that sense. The Iroquois' move into ny state as mohawks who terrorized surrounding tribes

I'm not claiming that natives were not guilty of bad behavior themselves, I simply understand why they'd wanted to move away from any colonialism connection.

And its a weak name anyway.

This is a joke. It is ahistorical. Universities don’t care about facts or truth. PC garbage.

This is absolutely silly. This whole colonizer thing is pretty ridiculous too. Tribes, nations, or groups of people all had conflicts and conquered eachother. That how it worked. The Aztecs were the major conquered in Mexico. They conquered and raped and took sacrifices from the other neighboring tribes. Until they were conquered by the Spaniards with the help of the other tribes in Mexico who were oppressed by the Aztecs. This is history. People conquering people. You can’t look at something that happened centuries ago through the Lens of today.

What about the Foggy Bottoms 😜

Pardon my forgetfulness for always failing to keep this straight. To confirm:

Snowflakes = people who elect to make changes regarding how they do business in ways they regard as appropriate for their stakeholders

Not snowflakes = People in no way connected to or impacted by said decisions who nonetheless get triggered and bitch endlessly about them on social media and basketball message boards

Do I have that right?

Dan should have known, esp with the crazies that often show their ignorance on LOTS, that this narrowly basketball related thread would turn into THIS type of thread 🤮
