BIG FISH: Yankees score huge catch by acquiring Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton: reports

MIKE MAZZEO
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Updated: Saturday, December 9, 2017, 9:45 AM

Yankees fans are on the verge of receiving an early Christmas present: 2017 NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton.

Bombers GM Brian Cashman has a blockbuster deal in place with Derek Jeter and the desperate Marlins to land the 28-year-old slugger, according to multiple national reports.

The Yankees are one of the teams Stanton has said he would waive his no trade-clause for.

The exact package going to Miami is not yet known, but it will be some sort of combination of a veterans and lesser tier prospects, according to reports. Stanton is due $295 million over the next 10 years, and the Yankees have made it a mandate that they will get under the $197 million luxury-tax threshold for 2018.

Derek Jeter's career in photos

Jacoby Ellsbury, Starlin Castro, Chase Headley and Brett Gardner have been mentioned as possibilities, with Ellsbury seen as unlikely given he still has $68.5 million and three years remaining on his albatross of a deal - plus a no-trade clause. Castro has about two years and $22.8 million left, while Headley and Gardner are each one year and $13 million and $11.5 million, respectively.

The prospects going the other way would presumably not include Gleyber Torres, Justus Sheffield or Estevan Florial, all of whom scouts rave about. Still, Gary Denbo knows the Yankees' system as well as anyone, so he's more apt to find the next Robinson Cano than the next Joaquin Arias.

So much for not getting Shohei Ohtani. This is some type of consolation prize.

And so much for the Bombers being considered “likeable.” No, this would mean the Evil Empire is back, the type of game-changer that was A-Rod for Alfonso Soriano back in 2004.

If Stanton says yes, new manager Aaron Boone would have the luxury of setting up his 2018 lineup with Aaron Judge, Stanton and Gary Sanchez hitting 2-3-4, if he so desires.

Judge (52) and Stanton (59) – the home run kings in the AL and NL last season – combined for 111 homers in 2017.

But is this town big enough for the both of them? Can there be a Judge's Chambers, and, as one clever Twitter user suggested, a Stanton Island?

Back in May, Stanton, whose contract contains a 2020 opt-out got annoyed simply by having to answer so many questions about the emerging Judge. How would he deal with actual adversity in this city?

He's also had his share of injuries in his career, averaging 115 games played from 2012-16 due to various ailments, though he did play in 159 games in 2017. Judge, the AL Rookie of the Year and runner-up for AL MVP, underwent offseason shoulder surgery.

Best of 2017 MLB All-Star Game

This all seems like the perfect storm, given that it never felt like this was going to happen. The Bombers finished second in the majors in runs scored last season, and really need starting pitching, not a second power-hitting superstar right fielder.

But a rare opportunity such as this one proved to be a perfect storm of sorts, with Stanton holding all the cards and Jeter and the Marlins trying to get out of a reported $400 million debt.

Miami had deals in place with the Cardinals and Giants, but both teams backed out with Stanton not wanting to play in either St. Louis or San Francisco.

Cashman reportedly told Jeter that he'd rather have Troy Tulowitzki than the then 36-year-old shortstop when the two sides were contentiously negotiating Jeter's final contract in the offseason following the 2010 campaign. Eight years later, you wonder if Jeter will get a World Series ring from his old team if this deal goes through and the Bombers win it all.

I understand the hate and if I wasn't a Yankee fan I would feel the same way.

But conspiracy? Obviously not. Jeter is not going to make decisions that he thinks will hurt the Marlins. He had deals in place to trade Stanton to the Cards or Giants but both were nixed by the player.

The bigger issue as I see it is why would MLB approve Jeter's group when they bought the Marlins? Clearly they have money issues right off the bat and it looks like their main goal is to financially gut the team and start from scratch.

This is going to be a long rebuild for the Marlins.

Sherman group took on 400 mil in debt

The franchise was in such bad shape that I'm sure there weren't many quality buyers and I assume the winner of the sell off was the best of the worst.

A shame for Florida fans. The Marlins are not going to attract flies for many years to come.

Loria group totally alienated south Florida and there is bond repayment for the stadium through 2045 or so is there really a fan base?

Eerily similar to the ARod trade years ago after Aaron Boone got hurt playing basketball.

The ARod trade was a brilliant move by Cashman - let's hope they learned NOT to give another stupid deal when Stanton opts out in 2020 like they did with ARod. Thankfully Hank is no longer making decisions.

As a longtime evil empire hater it always feels good to be able to passionately root against the yanks
These trades help. Captain clutch comes thru again.

Oh how I miss Stump Merrill.

Just as my life-long hatred for the Yankees was beginning to wane they go and do this. Hope they all underachieve and finish ten games behind the Red Sox.

Actually, as a non-Yankees fan I am happy they made this trade as a reactionary move to missing out on the Japanese kid. It was a knee-jerk reaction in my opinion. They are becoming the Colorado Rockies with all hitting and no pitching. Stanton gets injured very often and is a redundant Judge. They now sit at $131mm for 7 players with arbitration hearings for Gregorious, Gray and Betances. After next season Severino gets arbitration and after '19 Judge and Sanchez will command big $$ in arbitration if they continue to hit.

If you're a Yankees fan, what made them good in the late 90's was balanced hitting and pitching with table setters. What looks good on paper, may or may not translate.

It could work out, but as an opposing fan, I like the Yankees tying up 10 years to him.

Mets fan? Most Mets fans stop watching baseball around June when their team is 10-15 games out of first.

That would explain why you don’t know anything about baseball.

Funny post though. Thanks.

Love the angry Yankees’ fans that don’t pay attention to baseball at all! Makes me laugh.

Don’t assume anything about me Simone. You’re obviously young and foolish (especially from other posts).

And by the way—as far as the contracts go, NOTHING you said would support your “you don’t know anything about baseball” statement. Give me facts and supportive opinions. Those defensive posts that you put up just make me crack up regarding your ignorance. Fans like you that like a big splash because you know zero about analytics, sabermetrics and clubhouse presence.

Oh and One other thing Simone: most true Yankee fans could careless what I think. It’s only the fake ones that respond the way you do. A little lesson for your youthful mind: If you want to be a real fan of a franchise that has a very successful history, you learn that there will be many dissenters. And if you’re sooo successful, there’s no need to be defensive.

And the funniest moments are responses from people like you that “say” they don’t care what I think but they get so emotional and take it as a personal assault. It’s why I know you have no clue about baseball. You show up when they win and just ignore the team when they lose.

Im expecting the “27 championships” response from you. That’ll show your true colors.

2017 Yankees Team Pitching all of MLB

5th in ERA
5th in FIP
4th in SO
2nd in BAA
2nd in WAR

Good call on Rockies comparison. Nailed it.

You make an outstanding point about redundancy though. Why would the Yankees want 2 guys that hit over 50 homers, have an OPS 1.000+, both are top outfielders that are in the primes of their careers?

Maybe the Nationals and Mets will cut redundant Strasburg and redundant deGrom.

Tune into some games next year though. The Yankees will be fun to watch but even in your own division there are a couple of good teams. The Mets, Marlins and Phillies are all horrible, but Atlanta has some nice young pieces and the Nationals are still competitive.

The Yankees are fine and able to get the pitching they need from their farm and perhaps one additional big trade. CC’s time is numbered but he came through like one of the Yankee greats this past year. We will be fine and have murders row again now that Stanton, Judge and Sanchez are going to be really tough to play around. Judge just needs to get his SO’s down by about 50%.

It’s killing Derek Jeter that he might be helping the Yankees

Here in New York, we know better.

Derek Jeter as a double agent, working to help his old team? That would make as much sense as suggesting the former Yankees captain would use Alex Rodriguez as his “Phone a friend” were he to ever appear on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

You can bet a year’s worth of gift baskets that trading his expensive, unhappy superstar Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees brought only unhappiness to the Marlins’ rookie CEO. That being cornered into making this deal, which resulted in sizable social-media mocking that questioned his true loyalties, has to add aggravation to what has been a very rough opening act of Jeter’s new career.

He’ll have his opportunity to defend this transaction, to insist that his ownership group has the financial fortitude and baseball savvy to pull the Marlins out of their morass. What he can’t say, but what everyone in New York knows, is this:

The last thing he wants to do is help the Yankees.

After playing baseball, Jeter’s greatest gift might be his ability to hold a grudge. Remember that turbulent negotiation during Jeter’s one experience as a free agent, between the 2010 and 2011 seasons? Jeter does.

Derek Jeter conspiracy theories are flooding Twitter

In the first three years after he retired, Jeter made himself scarce on Yankees property. He came to Yankee Stadium out of respect for his honored teammates Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams, then when the franchise retired his own No. 2. In Tampa, where he lives full-time and the Yankees hold spring training, Jeter met off-site a few times with Yankees minor leaguers at the request of Gary Denbo, his first professional manager and perpetual swing doctor who now works as the Marlins’ vice president of player development and scouting.

So folks in South Florida, Boston and everywhere else can dispatch with the theory that Jeter wants the Yankees to add to their trove of trophies. Besides, Marlins fans can find plenty of legitimate grievances and concerns about Jeter and his chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman.

Start with the question about money. The top asset the Marlins received from the Yankees for Stanton was payroll flexibility, as the Yankees assumed $265 million of the $295 million Stanton has guaranteed. Had the Marlins been willing to take another bad Yankees contract or pay down more of the contract, they would’ve been in position to ask for better talent in return. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports first reported that the Marlins continue to seek out more investors.

Then go to competence. Jeter has experienced his share of missteps and misfortune already, from dismissing the franchise’s four wise men (Jeff Conine, Andre Dawson, Jack McKeon and Tony Perez) and clumsily attempting (and failing) to bring them back, to veteran scout Marty Scott getting fired while he was in the hospital recovering from surgery to treat his cancer. He also admitted at the owners’ meetings last month that he had yet to speak with Stanton, a most curious decision.

Seems everyone has these three guys back to back to back in the batting order. I think it best to throw a lefty (Bird ) in front of Sanchez in the 5th spot.

I would go

1 Gardener
2 Gregorious
3 Judge
4 Stanton
5 Bird
6 Sanchez

Although some might think this better (I do not)

Here's a question. Would this trade have happened if A-Rod was named manager.

Wonder if the Judge's Chambers will have a competing area called Stanton Island in left field?

As mentioned above, the biggest issue to me is MLB approving the new ownership group of the Marlins. the bond payments were known as were the contract dollars of the players. Looking for new investors before the team has had a spring training implies to me that MLB did a POOR job here.

Buster Olney's ESPN blog today makes the argument for what I was thinking, bad Judge leadoff. Most walks by a rookie since some guy named Ted Williams. Second highest on base percentage to Mike Trout. Between the walks and strikeouts Judge sees alot of pitches. Gardner batting second does the same thing in terms of forcing the pitcher to throw many pitches all of which the hitters after the first two get to observe.Based on the metrics vs the starter: third would be Stanton followed by Bird, Sanchez and Gregorious. Stanton and Sanchez would be interchangeable as would Bird and Didi.

Again—making assumptions about “my team”. I appreciate the foolishness and ignorance though.

Let’s dive into some other numbers. The Yankees starters had a BAPIP of .280 (for your challenged mind, that’s batting average of batted balls in play). That number lead the league. ZIPs projections suggest they will fall into the mean at the very least next season. Because of that, all of your past Yankee pitching stats are quite skewed and have been manipulated in no small part to luck.

Giancarlo Stanton has averaged 115 games per season for 5 seasons prior to last year. So maybe if I tune into a game he will actually play???

But since you’re bringing up past numbers and performance and your struggle with the English language regarding what I write (since you’ve decided I’m a Mets fan), The Post suggested the Mets had a $1 billion starting staff before the 2016 began. Injuries homie, injuries.

Masahiro Tanaka’s arm is about to fall off (do you wonder why he didn’t opt out of his contract this year?). How about the fact that out of the 4 teams that Stanton wanted to go to (Dodgers, Houston, Chicago Cubs, Yankees), only the Yankees were willing to take his contract on. (Dodgers!!—the team that’s been paying Carl Crawford $21mm+ over the last 4/5 to sit and watch games).

My point is, it’s a risk and it looks pretty now on paper. We shall see.

Oh and by the way—Cashman is ON RECORD for saying Stanton was an immediate reaction once Ohtani was off the table.
