Following up on the Keenan-Kirkpatrick thread that folded into a Gonzalez thread, I myself have personally been a victim of Gonzo's craziness. My son and his friends attended the Summer Seton Hall Basketball Camp for many consecutive years. Each year I would trek over to South Orange from Hunterdon County and I would drop the kids off and then park and walk over to the library as I had always planned that week around working from there.
At the time, I was driving a giant red Hummer SUV. My normal parking spot was always directly behind the REC Center , directly opposite the rear stairs that led up to the back portion of the gym. On this particular day, I had to take a business call from my vehicle. As I was talking to a client, I had my hand outside of the vehicle's window. Little did I know or ever expect what was going to happen next.
As I sat in that parking spot on the phone, I heard a very agitated person screaming in my direction inquiring as to "Who the Fxxx are you and what the Fxxx are you doing here." I was shocked to hear this outburst and I turned to face this individual. I was absolutely stunned to see Bobby Gonzalez himself standing there. Understandably I was caught completely off guard and I explained to Bobby that I had just dropped my kid off at his basketball camp and I was presently taking a business call.
After about a minute of pondering my response, he profusely apologized. He stated that he mistook me for an agent who was trying to poach off one of his players. I asked him why he initially thought that I was an agent. His response was comical. He said I was in his parking lot sitting in a fancy Hummer while wearing a gold Rolex watch on the hand that he saw outside of the open window. He again apologized for his outburst and said he felt terrible that he berated someone who was indirectly helping him by sending their kid to his camp. My son and I laugh about this story to this day as it is almost too crazy to believe.
The most ironic thing about this story is that there was no one on the team this particular year who even came close to having NBA or even top European talent. So when you hear a story about Bobby that indicates that he was crazy, you can certainly believe it.
