I watched the first two episodes last night. The first was about his taking office after Kennedy's assassination. The whole process of how he took the oath with Jackie Kennedy at his side on the plane was striking. The second episode was about his role in advancing civil rights and the Voting Rights Act, that did a very good job focusing on the behind the scenes work he did with MLK, Jesse Jackson, John Lewis and others. The black leaders, while not speaking ill of JFK, felt that Johnson was a better leader to partner as a white man from Texas. Tonight is Viet Nam.Awhile back my brother read a book by on of his secret service detail.
He wrote about lbj asking his African American drive his car and his two dogs back to Texas. The driver replied that he was fine with car but not the dogs. Lbj asked why and he replied that it was hard enough finding morels that allowed blacks let alone a black with two dogs.
As told by my brother, this had an impact on lbj and contributed to his civil rights efforts.
I'd be interested in watching the piece you cite.
is it on demand? So far it's been very well done and leaned some things about Johnson that I want to read about further. Lost in the escalation of the war, he accomplished passing and incredible amount of landmark and meaningful legislation in a very short time.
Some stark contrasts to our last three Presidents, first being his work ethic....not interested or did he waste time being a celebrity President like BO and DT....engaged with all of the power brokers at the time too. Didn't realize how much time he spent in meetings/discussions with MLK. He also actually got things done with Congress instead of signing of executive orders.
He did despise the press and was fixated on them, much like Trump, which was a result of the way the administration was portraying the war rather than what was really going on there. Good stuff from Bob Schieffer and Peter Arnot. who were there. Escalation in Viet Nam was his biggest mistake, but I can understand why he made the decisions that he did.
It's a good watch.
