SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s soccer team ended its preseason slate on a high note, notching a 2-1 victory over Saint Peter’s on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The victory for the Pirates followed a draw with Fordham on Thursday, as The Hall concludes its exhibition schedule with a record of 1-0-1.

Samuel Geiler (Offenberg, Germany) and Jeremy Witherspoon (South Orange, N.J.) found the back of the net for the Pirates, who out-shot the Peacocks 13-12 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal. Seton Hall finished the preseason with four goals from four different scorers.

Turning Point

With the Pirates up 1-0 in the 61st minute, freshman Lorant Lettner (Budapest, Hungary) laid off a perfect through ball for Witherspoon about 30 yards from goal. With the Saint Peter’s keeper charging, Witherspoon sent a well-placed chip high over the netminder and bouncing into the back of the cage. The goal doubled SHU’s lead and eventually stood up as the game-winner.

Head Coach Gerson Echeverry on the result

“After the exhibitions I feel we have a deep bench, something we have not had here in a while. I think that we have a lot of guys we can call upon and our level is not going to fall off. Even in a lot of instances our level of play might rise, so that is extremely positive.”

Goals

SHU – 23rd minute –Geiler (1) carried into left side of penalty area, slotted right corner

SHU – 61st minute – Witherspoon (1) chipped over keeper from 30 yards out off Lettner assist
