Sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 18 points to lead four Pirates in double-figures and added a career-high eight assists as the Seton Hall men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season with an 84-67 victory over Dartmouth on Friday night at the Prudential Center.
The Hall (1-0) connected at a gaudy 61.7 percent clip from the floor as deadeye shooting helped the squad stretch what was a six-point halftime advantage into the 17-point final margin.
Senior Derrick Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) posted 14 points and five assists in 30 minutes off the bench during his SHU debut while sophomores Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively.
Whitehead, Carrington and Rodriguez were part of an all-sophomore starting five for head coach Kevin Willard that also included Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.).
The reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Delgado recorded seven points to go with a game-high nine rebounds while Sanogo finished just shy of his first career double-double in only his second career start; scoring nine points and hauling down eight boards while leading all players with three blocks.
The contest was back-and-forth for much of the opening stanza but Whitehead found Gordon for a layup at the 6:09 mark of the first half that ignited an 8-0 run for The Hall and put the Pirates on top for good.
Evan Bourdeaux scored a game-high 25 points for Dartmouth (0-1) but the Big Green shot just 38.1 percent from the field and were out-rebounded by the Pirates, 45-to-27.
Coach Kevin Willard on the performance:
"I was really happy defensively. Dartmouth won seven in-a-row last year...This was going to be a good test. Everyone we are playing on the schedule is going to be a good test."
Turning Point
Whitehead buried the second of his two 3-pointers on the night to give the Pirates a 66-56 edge with 8:40 to play, stemming a stretch where Dartmouth had creeped back to within seven. The Seton Hall lead remained in double digits for all but 41 seconds down the stretch.
Inside The Numbers
- Both Sanogo and Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria) came up one-point short of adding another pair of double-digit scorers for The Hall. Nzei connected on 4-of-5 field goals in his collegiate debut and together, Nzei, Sanogo, Delgado and Rodriguez combined to shoot 15-for-19 (.789) and combine for 37 points
- The dominant frontcourt showing resulted in a 48-to-22 advantage for the Pirates in the paint
- Seton Hall's 61.7 percent field goal percentage is the team's highest since going 33-for-51 (.647) in a 78-55 win over Mount St. Mary's last season (Dec. 2)
- With 84 points, the Pirates posted their highest scoring output in a season opener since pouring in 88 points against St. Francis (NY) in 2008-09 (W, 88-61)
- SHU totaled 20 assists on 29 field goals including nine of 13 in the first half. The Hall last reached the 20-assist plateau in a victory at Marquette (Jan. 28) last year and it was the highest number of helpers The Hall has handed out against a non-conference opponent since finishing with 21 in a pair of back-back-back victories over LIU-Brooklyn and Longwood in 2012-13
- Seton Hall shot 50 percent from beyond the arc but knocked down just four treys on the evening. The four 3-pointers are the team's lowest total in a win since taking down No. 6 Villanova, 66-61, despite sinking just 2-of-15 triples at home last season (Jan. 3)
- The Pirates attempted 43 free throws, making 22. The Hall last earned as many as 43 attempts from the line against Kent State in the second game of the 2013-14 season. Both Whitehead and Rodriguez attempted 11 free throws on the evening
News and Notes
- Junior Braeden Anderson (Okotoks, Alberta), who is enrolled in the Seton Hall University Law School after transferring from Fresno State, joined Gordon, Nzei, freshman Veer Singh (New York, N.Y.) and junior walk-on Michael Dowdy Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) in a group of five Pirates who played their first official game for the program on Friday
- With the win, Seton Hall improves to 34-4 (.894) at home in non-conference play under Willard
- Delgado led The Hall on the boards for the 27th time in 32 career appearances while Whitehead has now surpassed the five-assist mark in 10 of 23 games for the Pirates
- Eight consecutive non-conference foes have failed to score 70 points when visiting The Hall dating back to the 2013-14 campaign
- Seton Hall and Dartmouth met for the first time since 1978 and the all-time series is now knotted at 4-4
