SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall women’s soccer player Emily Hansinger (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and baseball player Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) were named the winners of the 2015-16 BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, presented by Sunkist.
Each institutional winner receives $2,000 towards graduate studies. Twenty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 10 member institutions) are named as BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.
Hansinger, a Biology major and member of the Physician Assistant Program at The Hall, is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and member of the National Student-Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma.
Earlier this month, she was honored as Seton Hall's "Woman of the Year" at the New Jersey National Girls & Women in Sports Day Luncheon in recognition of her athletic excellence, academic success and efforts in the community. She serves as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at The Hall and recently wrapped up a standout career on the pitch during which she made 57 appearances for the Pirates; serving as a team captain for the last two seasons.
A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Weigel was named to the All-BIG EAST second team in 2015 after starting 45 games and batting a team second-best .287 with 27 RBIs and a .397 on-base percentage. Last year, he led the team with 27 walks and stole 15 bases, the fourth-most in the BIG EAST Conference. Weigel was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 6 and both BIG EAST and ECAC Player of the Week on March 24. He had a triple and drove in four runs at St. John’s on April 12 and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs at Xavier on April 2.
Weigel, a Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society member, closed his standout junior season by being named to the All-Tournament Team of the BIG EAST Championship for a second straight season.
