Hartford to drop from D1 to D3

17 D-1 sports; losing $13 million per year with declining enrollment since the current president has been on board. Sports writers killing the president, but doesn't seem to be too much push back from other university officials. D-III starts in Sept. 2025. Can you imagine the excitement [sarcasm!] surrounding basketball and soccer events in the interim.

Tough spot for many schools. Too high a price to pay for the theoretical draw of athletics. They do have a decent endowment.

And that's the thing. This theoretical draw is mostly imaginary even at school that compete at higher levels than Hartford was doing. For them, it was a complete waste of resources, as it is for so many other institutions, which is why you will see others follow suit. It's a tough ghost to let go of, but others will come to their senses, too.

There are 424 colleges in the US playing Division - 111 basketball and is the largest NCAA division so it’s not like Hartford is going to be on an island all alone. Whether we’ll see a trend of colleges following suit is unclear just as it remains unclear whether we’ll see colleges closing or merging to remain competitive in the race to attract students .

Also have to remember that just like you’ll have some college presidents who are pro-athletics (sometimes to an extreme), you can also just as easily have some who are anti-athletics. The Hartford president clearly falls into the anti category.

Some of those FAQ’s were apparently written by Hartford’s creative writing department. I feel bad for their student athletes.
