Tough spot for many schools. Too high a price to pay for the theoretical draw of athletics. They do have a decent endowment.

And that's the thing. This theoretical draw is mostly imaginary even at school that compete at higher levels than Hartford was doing. For them, it was a complete waste of resources, as it is for so many other institutions, which is why you will see others follow suit. It's a tough ghost to let go of, but others will come to their senses, too.

There are 424 colleges in the US playing Division - 111 basketball and is the largest NCAA division so it’s not like Hartford is going to be on an island all alone. Whether we’ll see a trend of colleges following suit is unclear just as it remains unclear whether we’ll see colleges closing or merging to remain competitive in the race to attract students .

Also have to remember that just like you’ll have some college presidents who are pro-athletics (sometimes to an extreme), you can also just as easily have some who are anti-athletics. The Hartford president clearly falls into the anti category.
