For the healthcare nerds (from one)...you can drill down on hospitals by state or city to see if they are being penalized for HAI or readmission rates. While the data is helpful directionally, you have to factor that some of the rates are dependent on the patient population that the hospital serves. If you're having a procedure at a facility that's on the list, might be a good idea to ask a few more questions.

Haven't followed readmission rates over the last 2 years or so, but I do recall some progress was being made there after the ACA.
Were the targets unrealistic or did readmission rates go up?

I haven't followed the triple aim stats to be honest. I must say, I wasn't surprised to see some of the hospitals make the list...as a potential patient, people should pay attention to this stuff.

Please educate me with the ramifications of this penalty. For example, if I get a procedure at Hackensack Medical Hospital and they are on the list for re-admissions, what does that mean?

It's a measure of quality of the care that you are getting.
It decreases their payments when the payor is Medicare. Wouldn't really impact you other than questioning if your hospital is providing a high level of quality.

I was surprised to see how many got hit with a penalty but haven't had a chance to dig into that at all yet.

Yes, if a hospital is on this list and I was about to have a procedure done there, I would dig a little deeper. HAI’s are a red flag. All hospitals don’t deliver the same outcomes.

Indeed. I had eye surgery at overlook recently and had a great experience. Glad they came out pretty well compared to some others on the list.

Well how is Hackensack Medical Center rated the best or second best hospital in NJ then?

Rated by who? And what criteria is used in the rating you refer?

If you look at the data, the HMC facility in Westwood hasn’t met either criteria. Main campus only got dinged on readmissions.

Got it. Ranking different criteria. Hospitals in the USNWR are ranked by specialties offered and outcomes which is obviously important, but if you’re more likely to get an infection while in that hospital, you need to factor that in to your decision. The HMC main campus is a good facility IMO. It got dinged on readmissions but that could be a function of some of their patient population.
