How can we improve our Rebounding?

The rebounding has been a problem all year but I wasn’t overly concerned because we played some big, physical teams. But to see even teams like Sacred Heart getting 11 offensive rebounds is surprising.

In our 6 games against P6 schools we have been out rebounded by 48 or 8 per game and are allowing 13 offensive boards per game.

The way we switch and defend we are often out of position to board but we still have to do better. Obviously our physicality is an issue and we need to get our guards more involved but what about our Bigs and do we have anyone on the bench who can help?

I think Sandro is our best rebounder and the numbers bear that out as he’s averaging 8 per game and 11.5 per 40 minutes. We need him on the court as much as possible.

But the one guy who I counted on to be a great rebounder was Mike Nzei and he is not performing. In his first 3 seasons he averaged nearly 9.0 per 40 minutes but with his increased playing time, his rebounding has decreased to only 6.8 per 40 mins.

He’s playing solid D, is a good scorer around the hoop and is a valued leader. Can we risk giving a better rebounder like Gil (10.2 per 40) more minutes? TT is at best an average rebounder who rebounds at same level as Nzei so he wouldn’t really help.

The only other player on the bench who may be able to help is Rhoden who has rebounded better (7.8 to 5.4 per 40) than Cale. But Cale provides so much on D and is a threat from 3 that Rhoden hasn’t shown thus far.

We need more out of Mike and Cale and perhaps Willard can give a few extra minutes to Gil and Rhoden. But the biggest improvement is going to have to come from the team as a whole. An emphasis needs to be placed on blocking out and rebounding as a team.
