As always readers this is to date not a prediction re the season.

1. Xavier 12-0 Deep, rugged and well coached.

2. Butler 10-1 Offensive juggernaut and also well coached.

3. Villanova 9-2 Still could be the team to beat.

4. Providence 12-1 Now clearly in the elite mix.

5 Seton Hall 10-2 To stay at the head of the next pack a victory over Marquette is needed.

6 Marquette 10-2 To get to the head of the next pack a victory over Seton Hall is needed.

7 Creighton 8-4 Not better than Georgetown but right now they're ahead of the Hoyas.

8 Georgetown 7-5 Absolutely ridiculous for Georgetown to be this low.

9 DePaul 6-6 Victory over a flat George Washington light at the end of the tunnel?

10 St. John's 7-6 As the Brooklyn Dodgers always said, wait till next year.

1. Butler - Jones would probably be POY in the league if it ended today. 13, 8, & 5.
2. X - haven't beaten anyone except Cincy. Overrated IMO
3. Nova - could still be the team to beat
4. Prov - best tandem in the league

5. Marquette - best of the next
6. SH - win on Wed & move up
7. Gtown - they are better than their record. Would have them 5th but 2 bad losses

8. DePaul - could beat some teams at home. they have talent
9. Creighton - not very good

10. St John's - in 2 yrs, Mullin will turn the program around.

1. Villanova - still the team to beat until proven otherwise. Two incredibly tough opponents are their only losses. Too reliant on 3s though.
2. Xavier - strong start, love the defensive and rebounding numbers. Game vs. VU this week will be terrific.
3. Butler - defense concerns me a bit but they can score and they protect the ball so well. Culture is so important and they prove it.

4. Providence - still would like to see more. Have played a very weak schedule outside of their exempt tournament. Bentil is the most improved player in the league to date.

5. Seton Hall - like what I'm seeing but they need to prove it against good competition night in and night out. Growing with each game.
6. Marquette - young and turnover prone but very talented and an energetic coach. I think they can move up but the jury is still out.
7. Georgetown - baffled by what's going on there. Talent is better than what they've shown. Need to defend.
8. Creighton - much better team than almost everyone gives them credit for. Ahead of GT and MU in KenPom. Weak schedule to date though.

9. DePaul - Not a total pushover but not an awful team despite a poor record. Not sure what to make of them overall.

10. St. John's - young and irrelevant this year.

1. Xavier. One of the best in the country
2. Butler. I like their grittiness and how they can close out games, but I think their talent is a bit less than the other top teams
3. Providence. Maybe the top 1-2 punch in the country
4. Nova. Time to start playing the role of the hunter.

5. Seton Hall. Did what they had to out of conference, now time to find ten more wins. 9 more wins has them on the bubble and nervous on selection Sunday.
6. Marquette. Same situation as seton hall, but I think they need to get to 10 wins

7. Georgetown. Ugh.
8. Creighton. Blah

9. Depaul. Have talent, but need a real coach.
10. St. John's. Ugh.

1) Xavier
2) Butler
3) Villanova
4) Providence

1-4 are all pretty close, Villanova still the team to beat

5) Marquette
6) Seton Hall
7) Georgetown
8) Creighton

5-8 are all pretty close, who actually is Georgetown?

9) DePaul
10) St John's

Appears to be consensus. Will the Big east be able to get 6 teams into NCAAs?

Why do people think Creighton is solid? No good wins. 2 blowout losses when playing good teams.

One blow out loss, not two

Both losses were very early

Beat LSU on a neutral court

Beat Arizona State on a neutral court

Beat Wisconsin on the road

Have won 9 games in a row

Have a lethal big man combo

My error. Had Marquette on my mind since we're playing them next.....

Big East preview -

POWER RANKINGS, POSTSEASON PREDICTIONS

Tourney teams

  • 1. Xavier: Chris Mack’s team, which reached the Sweet 16 a season ago, has everything a team needs to not only reach that point but go further. And if Edmond Sumner continues to develop at the point, Houston is possible.
  • 2. Villanova: The Wildcats do have to shoot better from the perimeter than they have, and with players such as Arcidiacono, Brunson and Hart they’re capable of turning things around on that front. But do they have enough in the post to play deep into March?
  • 3. Butler: The Bulldogs don’t defend as well as they did in years past, but they’re better offensively thanks to the presence of two playmakers in Tyler Lewis and Roosevelt Jones.
  • 4. Providence: Dunn and Bentil have been excellent, but Ed Cooley’s had many other contributors step forward as well. And their play with Dunn out of the lineup can only help the confidence of those supplementary players moving forward.
  • 5. Marquette: The Golden Eagles’ best wins have come over teams likely to land on the bubble (Arizona State, LSU, Wisconsin). They’ve got an extremely talented front court tandem in Ellenson and Fischer, but the key moving forward: the guards keeping the turnovers (19.6 percent turnover rate) to a minimum.
NIT teams

  • 6. Seton Hall: The progress made by Desi Rodriguez has been huge for the Pirates, who have wins over Ole Miss and Wichita State on their résumé. Kevin Willard’s team will go as far as their sophomore class, led by Rodriguez, Isaiah Whitehead and Angel Delgado, can lead them.
  • 7. Georgetown: The Hoyas have NCAA tournament talent, but they haven’t played to that level on a consistent basis thus far. The biggest issues have been on the offensive end, but they need to be better on the glass as well (7th in defensive rebounding percentage).
  • 8. Creighton: With Maurice Watson Jr. on the leading a balanced offensive attack, the Bluejays could surprise some people in league play. But in order to do so, they’ll need to improve defensively (last in field goal percentage defense, ninth in three-point percentage defense).
Autobid or bust

  • 9. DePaul: The Blue Demons did manage to knock off a ranked George Washington squad, but they’re unlikely to make a major move up the Big East pecking order.
  • 10. St. John’s: This is a rebuilding year for the Red Storm, who still hope to add Marcus LoVett Jr. at some point in the near future. That being said, they compete and are capable of pulling off some upsets in league play.
