CINCINNATI – Graduate student Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 10 kills and senior Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) filled the box score as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Xavier, 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-23) in Cincinnati on Sunday.
The turning point of the match was an epic second set that saw the Pirates stave off two set points before outlasting Xavier, 27-25. The victory is arguably the most-impressive of the season for Seton Hall and snaps a four-match losing streak.
Lucas tied for the match-high with 10 kills, only two attack errors and three digs. Klungel had another huge all-around performance with a team-high 29 assists, 11 digs, seven kills and three blocks. Junior Mason Woo (Burbank, Calif.) had a team-best 14 digs.
SET 1:
Down 2-1 early in set one, The Hall went on a 10-2 run, and a kill by Grace Turner (La Grange Highlands, Ill.) gave it an 11-4 lead and set Xavier to a timeout. Trailing 20-13, the Musketeers scored six of the next seven points to cut their deficit to 21-19, but they couldn't get closer. An attack error put The Hall in set point, 24-21, and a kill by Lucas gave it a 25-22 victory. The Pirates had a .297 attack percentage in the opening frame.
SET 2:
With the score tied at 13, Xavier scored four straight points and forced a Seton Hall timeout. Trailing 21-16, the Pirates went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 22 and send the Musketeers to a timeout. Seton Hall then staved off two Xavier set points to tie the score at 25. A kill by Lucas put the Pirates in set point, 26-25, and a Xavier attack error gave The Hall a dramatic 27-25 set-two victory.
SET 3:
Seton Hall led 12-7 early in set three, but Xavier methodically chipped away and eventually tied the score at 17. The Musketeers' fourth straight point gave them their first lead of the set, 18-17. The Hall didn't relent, however, and took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii). With the score tied at 23, another kill by Roberts-Navarro put The Hall in match point, and a Xavier attack error gave it a three-set sweep.
