No doubt Bob, Sr. has done many admirable things for St. Anthony's including foregoing his coaching salary, But no one should forget that he has become a very rich man as a result of his St. Anthony connections. A few years ago ESPN did a show on St. Anthony's and Hurley's efforts to raise large sums to keep the school operating. The program showed his apartment with floor to ceiling windows overlooking NY Harbor. It looked as if it was a modern high rise. Wow.

There was also a You Tube piece that I saw on our site, also several years ago, that in part showed a four-letter laced tirade he had in the locker room both at half time and after a game. As a veteran public school teacher and coach, if a one of us ever behaved that way, he would be fired from both jobs immediately. That it would be allowed at a Catholic high school, I found ironic.

Whats your point exactly? Without Bob Hurley, Sr. there would be no St. Anthony's.

Hurley did not "become very rich as a result of his St. Anthony's connections". The man spent his entire adult life in two different Jersey City public service positions: probation officer and Director of Recreation. Perhaps he simply invested his savings and pensions wisely. People who work hard deserve to live in retirement as they wish, not as others would have them live. Some people choose condos with floor to ceiling windows and a harbor view, some choose over-sized houses with large lawns and plastic flamingos.

While I'm not a fan of coaching tirades, I think we have also gone completely overboard as a society of political correctness. When you think of all the good Hurley has done to keep that school afloat and the positive impact he's had on kids that had very little direction or guidance, you have to admire him in many respects.

I know Jerry Walker is extremely generous, but with all of the other players that have come through that program and have had success, you would hope that they would band together and offer assistance (money or time) to support the school. Maybe the do or have, so this is not to be critical.

Beyond those jobs, he also made money from camps and videos/DVDs for players and coaches. I remember being younger and seeing an ad for one of his videos in basketball magazines. He also does speaking engagements and clinic appearances. All are very legit means to make money and you can certainly make good money if your camps, videos/DVDs, and presence are in demand. Seems like a lot of sour grapes by the original poster. Should he just refuse to make money or do all the camps, videos/DVDs, and appearances for free?

And apparently Hurley is the first catholic to ever swear.

I hope he made a pile of dough. He deserves what he can get. Best basketball coach ever.

At least 25 years ago, Hurley could have left JC and made millions coaching in college.

So what if he has made money. He has endorsed a handful of products over the years, and I'm sure he makes good money in camps and via the speaking circuit.

If anything, he has probably made about 10 percent of his true earning potential, which he sacrificed to stay in JC. And, let's face it, most people would want to get away from that place. Not many people would have done that.

The good he has done in getting those kids' minds right, cannot be measured in dollars.

And, yes, some coaches are very tough, demanding and they curse.

You want to know who is a lot tougher than a football coach or Hurley? Try a ballet teacher. They're terrors.

Anyone ever work as a line cook in a high pressure kitchen? You haven't heard cursing until you've heard an exec chef explode on a green line cook who just f'ed something up.

Worked in many restaurants and almost all had verbally abusive chefs or owners. Nothing was worse than the verbal beating I took from the superintendent of a golf course i worked at after mowing into the collar with a greens mower after a particularly rough evening the night before.

As far as Hurley's tirades, maybe that's part of what made him successful. My high school coaches screamed and cursed at us all the time. And we almost always deserved it.

I'm not a big fan of the yell and scream types, but I've had more than one coach that went ballistic every now and then and for one thing, it got my attention. For some reason, we are a society that has forgotten how to communicate one-on-one and respect authority. I always joke that in my career, of the ten greatest blow-out arguments, half of those were the person who had by far the most impact on my career. Despite the blow-ups, he always had my back and never did a reverse on anything he committed to me. Worked for him in three separate companies by choice...lol.

I wonder what Hurley thinks about the "everybody gets a trophy" society?

I want to go on a four-letter laced tirade after reading this post.

For all of the kids that he got into college and off the streets, he deserves to be a Saint.

Honestly Bob Hurley has done alot for many kids other than the St. Anthony players. He has assisted more kids than people give him credit for by providing great references for kids seeking scholarships, helping transfers find other colleges (not ex St. Anthony Players), being a strong community advocate in and around Jersey City, speaking at inner city coaching clinics in NJ and NY for no charge, and much-much more. And that apartment most likely is a controlled apartment in those towers in Jersey City owned by the two guys who at one time owned the Indiana Pacers. Lastly he deserves everything he now gets after giving so much for so many years.

The guy could have left years ago and made lots of money. But instead he has stayed at St. Anthonys and kept the doors open in a school that would have closed years ago helping lots of kids along the way. And you want to take that away from a hard working guy because he is now very wealthy? If in fact he is wealthy its not from working as a parole officer and sticking it out at St. Ants when many would have left. And I used to know a priest that did a lot of good. But this guy could curse like a sailor but that did not in any way tarnish all the good he did.

These are the kinds of people we should be celebrating and should be happy that he has now reached a good status in life instead of celebrating the hollywood and sports types we do. The whole world is F'ed up when someone is degraded for working hard and making money. I'm not sure where we are as a society but why is there a war against people who work hard and make money? Good for Hurley!
