My grandson goes to Randolph High school My daughter and him think it is a disgrace and a petition has been started to remove the Board of ED members. My Grandson and his parents thankfully have been practicing Republicans so I was confident they would oppose it.I wonder if BLM will object to MLK being removed from the calendar.Parents got to get more involved with the Board of ED who are often dominated by teachers who many favor critical race theory, all whites are privileged, republicsns who voted for Trump have to be reprogrammed. It is amazing that a lot of them have 2 degrees like me and are this clueless much like most dem pols who have no understanding of economics.

CRT is an interesting item that no one cared about until the last 18 months...i went to public school didnt ask my teachers if they leaned right or left

This is just plain stupid. This looking to a time 500 years ago with today’s eyes is unfair and counterproductive. The conquistadors were able to conquer the Aztecs because the Aztecs brutalized other tribes in Mexico. When Cortez would defeat a tribe on his March to Mexico City, he gave that tribe a chance to join the Spanish in their eventual conquest of the Aztecs.

All civilizations at that time were being conquered or doing the conquering. How did the major indigenous tribes become dominate? Well by defeating other tribes. It’s ridiculous to judge the Europeans by this.

Same here. That's because back then teachers just taught. They didn't indoctrinate political agendas.

For the most part, I’d bet the far majority still just teach.

Some are good and some are bad, which is probably the same as when you were in school, but with social media any story about a particularly bad one blows up.

But overwhelming majority advocate with, blindly follow or are intimidated speaking out against, the out of control union. Some won’t ever see that, only will talk about the skittles and ponies they wish to think about.

Do they, because many teachers unions did a pretty good job of preventing actual teaching from happening last year….

As a parent with 2 kids in elementary school, I thought the teachers did a very good job all things considered.

Most teachers will tell you it was a wasted year. They did a great job considering how their profession was used as a political weapon.

Happened to me once. In early HS my math teacher made a political statement to me that was wild - something about that my parents should vote a particular way in the upcoming presidential election “if they care about me going to college”. Of course that candidate was a D because the teachers Union would rationalize voting for Trump if he was the democratic candidate. My parents happened to support the candidate the teacher was voting for, but went ballistic that she brought that into the classroom in that way. They complained and that was the end it.

It was a wasted, disgraceful year for young kids in particular like mine (elementary level). Most of my kids teachers did the best they could and for the ones that actually care, I commend them for dealing with circumstances that they really didn’t have a choice in. They are simply following orders and in that profession at the public schools they do whatever the union leaders say. As for those union heads/leadership - they can go to hell with what they did to my kids this year and many others. The Catholic School down the street from me, with far less resources, was able to figure it out. It was all about power and money. And it was a disgrace.

Blindly follow, are intimidated or just fall in line. My brother is a guidance counselor in a large Bergen Counth public school. He deals with HS kids, many of which have issued. He is tenured so he had room to voice his opinion and repeatedly did about them being in person from day 1 in Sept, full day. He got ostracized by half his department for speaking out, but he doesn’t give a crap because he’s tenured and some powerful folks with the district value him as a counselor. He knew it was pointless because their union was, like others in the state, largely following the DNC script. But he couldn’t shut up about it in good faith.

I don't disagree that it was a difficult year, teachers were put in a very difficult spot and it went on longer than it had to. That said, the good teachers who would have been good teachers inside school were probably still good teachers virtually. The bad teachers who would have been bad teachers inside school were probably still bad teachers virtually.

All I was saying for this thread though was that I don't buy into the idea that teachers are indoctrinating our kids as some kind of leftist conspiracy. There will always be examples of teachers letting their political opinions influence them and I agree it shouldn't but those are just bad teachers and it's likely not much different than when you and I were in school.

Conflating two issues. It's pretty evident that the power of the teachers unions was detrimental to our children's education during the pandemic and they are also the source for a number of these teaching theories. It's no secret that the unions will support the Democratic candidate in any election, even if their agenda is completely far left of reality.

There is no metric available, but IMO, it's gotten way worse in the last 20-30 years. I doubt the teachers union would have been able to do some of the disgraceful things that they did during the pandemic if it had happened in the 90's.

We have several family members who are teachers (current or retired) and they are unanimous in their feelings that the union has gotten out of control.

Ditto. Mother retired public school teacher. Wife now a quasi retired teacher. Brother guidance counselor. Other immediate. They say the political stuff and agenda pushing is worse, even from 20 years ago when some of them were in school.

He always does that when his dreams of rainbows, skittles, ponies, and unicorns and other things are questioned. That or he needs more facts.

Union is out of control.

A number of PS teachers push a liberal agenda.

zero pushing conservative or even Republican agenda

Not really, I just don't buy into talking points without any substance.

I am not defending the teachers union. I am just saying that teachers are human, and they are not programed to indoctrinate our kids. Anecdotal stories about someone someone knows doesn't represent the experience of tens of millions of kids currently in school.

Who is saying teachers aren’t human? But when you have a union that has unchecked power and have proven to take absurd positions, they can intimidate their membership.

To the point "indoctrinating" our kids? No, I don't really believe that is happening outside of some very rare instances... well maybe outside of being forced to say the pledge of allegiance every morning. That is probably the only indoctrination I received as a student.

What about a news report almost weekly, if not more than that, about parents rallying to oppose some woke, BS curriculum change in the name of promoting diversity?

Agree to disagree there. Maybe you haven’t experienced it yet with your kids. I haven’t either directly with mine either, probably because of their age and the district that I live in. My brother is a guidance counselor at a Bergen County HS and is aware of curriculum issues in their school and colleges, because a big part of his job is the college placement process. He says the one-sides indoctrination at the college campus level is absurd right now, and it is tricking down to high schools. Not a huge issue yet at his HS, but it is a talking point among the faculty.

These parents aren't rallying at colleges though. From what I have seen so far, they are typically rallying to oppose something they saw on Facebook but don't actually understand or just wasn't true.

JFK made a mistake in letting public employees unionize.FDR wouldn’t allow it saying it was like fox guarding the hen house. We have a president who constantly talks about union jobs longing for a return to the 1950’s.I wish his aides would explain to Biden that only 7% of the private workforce is unionized.Biden constantly praises the 7% as our future. The world has changed and Biden longs for a return to the past.Too many Americans not on the public payroll like to be rewarded based on their contribution not work in and Alice and Wonderland where all must win and all must have prizes. The teachers union ironically has been a disaster for inner city black kids who are often drastically below. standard levels in math and English with no accountability for results on the teachers many of who would have been fired for poor performance without a union. The growth in US GDP over the last 40 years would not have been possible without the innovation of entrepreneurship particularly in Tech if we remained in a 1950’s style economy.
