One of the stocks I am most excited about in a long time had their IPO priced at $78. Unfortunately, I could not get into the IPO but I did buy in at $106. I think this company is going to be huge. Both ford and Amazon are invested in them. Plus their vehicles are pretty bad ass.

is this the truck company thats taken billions (with a b) in losses with no revenue?

It has lost a billion dollars before the IPO and prior to selling one vehicle. It is now a company valued at 80-100 billion. It already has 50.000 preorders for its vehicles.

I don't believe you're going to gain market share from Ford, Chevy and Dodge in this country. Is average Joe going to buy a Rivian for $67,000 or Tesla Cyber Truck? Unlikely. They're going to buy what they always have.

Well, keep investing in Ford. Ill keep investing in Tesla and Rivian and Lucid. Btw, who said you need market share to be successful? Tesla only has something like 4% of the market share right now. Obviously much more in just the EV category. Apple has only 13 to 15 % of the market in cell phones. It only happens to be the biggest and best company in the world.

Electric vehicles are the present and the future. In 10 years, the combustion engine will be relegated to a niche market.

Investing in Ford isn't a bad idea either considering how well they have done with their Rivain investment. Probably their best investment in years. lol

That said, the market cap for Rivian does seem bonkers considering it's higher than ford with maybe 100 vehicles on the road? But I like it as a long term play. I watched a few reviews of their truck and it looks great. Hoping to get one eventually.

i like electric cars but those aesthetically look stupid
Are you talking about electric cars in general or the Rivian? Quite frankly, I love the looks of Tesla, Lucid and I think Rivian looks really good. Besides the pick up by Tesla, I like them a lot.

I like the look a lot. Will be interesting to see how this truck does against the F150 lightning.

I think the Rivian and the F150 are two different markets. Contractors and people who need it for work are still going to go F150. But the person who uses for skiing, biking, camping as well as people who just like an SUV will gravitate towards the Rivian.

Yep, I tried to convince my wife that we need the F-150 but she's not really on board with a truck. I don't really need a pickup, just want the option of having the utility of a flatbed available. The RIvian is is an easier sell there at least based on looks, price is another story...

I'm back in the office now so we needed a 2nd car again and just picked up our 2nd EV last week. Got a Kia Niro.
Hard to imagine gong back to a combustion engine. EV's are just so much better in my opinion unless you go on frequent long distance road trips.

On the electric F150 website, price starts at $39k and goes up to 90K. That is one hell of a spread. In the end, I don't think there is going to be too much of a difference in price between the F150 and the RIvian. I just think that people use each vehicle will be pretty differ3nt. Moreover, once the infrastructure spending with the installing of high speed electric stations will solve the issue with any long distance driving as well.

I think you should put your $1000 deposit down for a Rivian right now. I will you will be able to sell your spot in line for a tidy profit if you change your mind.

lol. I get you would not buy it. But they already sold out on the initial 50,000 order. I don't like pickups but I love their SUV. In a year or so, I would rather have the Rivian over the Tesla and I love Tesla. BTW, Rivian closed today at $122.99!

i would buy a deposit if i knew i could actually sell it. is there a way to sell a deposit spot?

not sure i wanna move any money to them yet. the valuation seems inflated. maybe will give it a week or so to let it settle.

After reading Elon musk's biography and learning about the Tesla platform it is apparent that the electric vehicles have nothing but upside.

Made me think of a question I asked a few months back about car recommendations

I went Japanese sedan and American SUV and I love both FWIW
sedans are a dying breed. car companies no longer making them. hatchbacks make more sense tbh.

Yea I read that suggestion and appreciate it.
The sedans I get drive like a cloud so thanks but no thanks. Dying but quite clearly not dead

i didnt mean to say they didnt make sense for you. that came across poorly. meant to say it doesnt make sense for the manufacturers to make them anymore.

What people don't understand about Rivian is that they are also producing carrier vans for Amazon. Amazon put in an order for 100,000 vans. Amazing has a two year exclusivity deal with Rivian. https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/8/22765853/rivian-fleet-sales-amazon-exclusivity-van-r1t-r1s. The question is not about demand. The question is whether they can produce that many vehicles. Tesla struggled with production. We shall see if Rivian learned from the mistakes of Tesla. Whatever the case, Rivian is going to triple in price within 4 to 5 years. Think about UPS, Fed Ex, Amazon all ordering electric vans. Rivian has the potential to be bigger than Tesla.

Amazing that GM was so far advanced in electric vehicle technology with the EV1 in the 1990's. For whatever reason, they just gave it all up. Some say this was a conspiracy with the oil companies to kill off the electric vehicle. GM now is struggling to get back into the electric vehicle game. In my opinion, Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are the future of the automotive market.

so when you said you could buy a deposit and then flip it. you were talking out of your butt? can you actually address that?

When Tesla started selling cars, people started paying people who had made their deposits previously to get a car faster. I would think the same thing is going to happen with Rivian. Like anything else, there is no guarantee. If there is a market, that what will happen. If demás is not red hot, then it won’t happen. But Rivian also doesn’t require you to purchase the vehicle either although you made a deposit on it.

There you have it. Straight out of my butt.

finally. how would one go about actually selling that deposit? is there a unique code thats all you need? surely the deposit is tied to a name, card, maybe a social. its not a hard ticket you can just hand off

They are not transferable in theory. But apparently you can modify the name and contact info on the order for your account. It's not something that can be listed on ebay or something, but if you're in a community of enthusiasts, you can work out a deal.

hmm gotcha. appreciate the help.

i think electric cars are the future but im not sure what a company like rivian excels at over current car manufacturers that can also make electric vehicals

Better off buying the stock and if it takes off use that money to buy the car/truck

"the Model S sedan first went on sale on June 22, 2012, at a price of $77,400 (for the 85 kWh version). On that day, TSLA stock was trading at $6.76 per share (split-adjusted), so a thrifty ant could have bought about 11,450 shares for the price of one sedan.

As of this writing, TSLA is trading at around $655, so an investment of $77,400 in 2012 would be worth approximately $7.5 million today—enough to buy a loaded Model S for each of your 12 best friends, with plenty to spare."

No bloat. More nimble. No egos stuck in the past. Less union pressure.

Read Musk's book. They bought 20 inch displays for the Tesla at a fraction of the cost it would have taken Ford or GM to design and and make. Kinda like the pentagon and their toilet seats.

the problem is that theyre not able to actually make the cars.

would bloat not be considered a billion dollar loss before selling a single car?

I think of bloat as large bureaucratic companies.

The issue you raise is valid but not bloat.

well how exactly do you burn through BILLIONs of dollars? has any company ever done that before? i think its unprecedented.

Your math is off. Tesla is trading much higher and recently had a 5:1 split.

Also, the market cap for Tesla was nowhere near the absurd $130bn that Riveon is. But in this day of super EV hype and inflated valuations, nothing to say that they could justify that and more in time but could also flop like some others.

Rivian is so over valued. Let's check back in 3 months and see where that stock price stands. My guess is under $70

nope. believe it or not some people want their cars to look like cars and not amorphic blobs.
There’s something aesthetic somewhere between an amorphic blob and a box. That thing is hideous.
