Jerry on the game

I wonder who else was sick. Jerry is spot on. Gaffney has killed us in the past many times.

You could tell some guys were sluggish. Even Bediako coughing up a storm in the background when someone was taking fts

We’re just one of this teams that is prone to this. We have a lot of blowouts this year. Not varied enough across the board and have a thin margin for error. Need to be in our zone as the options are limited (what the metrics point to). We don’t shoot well and we’re OK defensively - good in spurts - but the physical style on both ends to win doesn’t have depth so you get a guy out or with the flu and it’s a mess.

But hey we’re 18-10, 11-6 NET 64 (not too much damage) and let’s seal a bid! In this Holloway Era Creighton has blown us out 3/4 games of our 0-4 mark. We tend to play more competitively with Connecticut. 🤞

The cloak and dagger in this program is maddening. We find out about an illness ripping through the team only minutes prior to tip, which killed all the optimism. Once I heard that, I knew we weren't winning. It's amazing how often our team of young athletes gets sick. Seems way more than the average program.

Fans greatly looking forward to an important game duped again as the team's mindset was anything but that.

I've been around college athletics for practically my entire career now, and this sort of open access to illness/injury information that you seek is pretty much non-existent.

It’s always a mystery. Not sure why. I don’t expect injury reports but no interviews nothing between games. We’ve beaten this dead horse all year. You’re not going to catch Creighton in a game plan snafu when we’re missing our only bench player and we have non-BE players filling the minutes for that or guys in foul trouble/ill.

Our overall road record in the big east is good (5-4 but soon to be 5-5). The big issue is that our 4 losses are by 20,18, 26 and 21 points. In his 2 years, Sha is 10-9 on the road which is fine. Nonetheless, those 9 losses have been by average of 15.2. In the age of the NET, we really can't be this non-competitive in these games.

It is amazing over the years how badly we have lost at Creighton. While we are 4-7 there in NBE (which is not bad), our 7 losses have been by an average of 15.3, and if you exclude a 1 point loss in 2014, we have lost by average of 19.5 points (incl 36 point loss in '21). And our last 4 losses there have been by avg of 24 points. Just a house of horrors for us.

It’s the type of team we are too. When teams get going from 3 we have no answers. We don’t defend it well (and the drop off in defense with the subs is even worse) and cannot shoot it.

1) Seems like Seton Hall always has an illness excuse. Is Seton Hall the only team that plays sick?? Um, no.

2) I don't think Creighton is a legitimate Final Four team.

They would not be in my top ten of FF teams. If they shot their ass off, who knows. True for many teams of course.

Re some other comments above: I am not at all surprised that I found out we were sick in TV or from Jerry at game time. We do seem to be sick more often that others, but maybe that is cause I only pay attn to us. Is it common for coaches to give advance notice that the flu has been running thru the team and a few guys are out and a few others are playing but not at full strength?

Illness might have contributed but the style of play is a factor also. We have guard play that is not based on 3 point shooting but rather mostly driving to the basket. A dominate low post player negates that option leaving outside shooting as a must. We are not a good outside shooting team so end of story. I expect the UConn game to be a similar formula. Our weakness will be exploited by UConn.

For a game or 3 maybe they are. But for 6 wins...have to agree. No depth and depends too heavily on outside shooting.
I'm on the fence. They have the dominant big guy who may not look pretty but he causes a lot of issues inside, can score easily and alters a lot of shots putting less pressure on their defense. They have solid shooters and Alexander is very talented and can create and shoot from distance. Scheirman is a great shooter. Ashworth is a crafty PG who can score when needed but manages their offense well. They have a short bench but that bench is gaining some strength. The bench is their weakness but they can match up against most teams. They rely on the three a little too much but can always adjust and go inside. They have a lot of talent 1-6 and don't get into foul trouble ever it seems allowing those 6 to stay on the floor. I've seen lesser Final 4 teams frankly.

I will likely have Creighton going far in my bracket this year.
They do so many things well, and don't make mistakes.

They do a great job controlling tempo. They foul less than any team in the country, they share the ball and don't turn over much, they box out well and don't give up offensive rebounds and their effective field goal percentage is third best in the country.

They have all of the right pieces for a run.

To me no bench and the over reliance of the 3 point shot is not a good combination to win 6 straight games.

Possible? Of course. Likely? More often than not, no.

The big issue with Creighton is they are different team outside of Omaha. They could definitely win 6 games if they were played in Omaha. Nonetheless, they just don't shoot it as well away from home, and that will be their issue.

Why would they owe us an explanation or give the exam questions to the opponent? I think your expectation is a little extreme

Sha was pretty clear that he wasn't making excuses.

You don't need to win 6 to get to the Final Four. Four wins gets you there.

They were close to the ff last year fwiw

I'm projecting for the whole ball of wax. I like Creighton and will be rooting for them, but I just don't like them to win 6 in a row no matter who they play.

Lots of stuff going around. And nothing like a plane ride to bring it to the forefront.

Still the effort was woeful. Win the last two games and we shd be in Dayton at worst.
