Jerry raps ESPN big time

Jerry has a point, but this has the whiff of a big whine. Willardesque.

Good reporter overall, but you can always count on shots at ESPN, shots at KenPom and unnecessary hype of the SH-Rutgers game from him. It's kind of old at this point. If ESPN wanted to stick it to the Big East, it wouldn't invite any of those teams to its events.

The Iowa game wasn't us? Who was it? Looked like our jerseys. Looked like our guys in our jerseys. We had a bad game. We're capable of bad games just like we're capable of very good games. That's us. We got beat bad. Let's own it and go on one of those major winning streaks.

I get the gripe about being placed on ESPN News because you would like to see your program get maximum exposure whenever is necessary.

But in that time slot ESPN has Mississippi St vs Ole Miss in college football. They weren’t elevating us over football in that spot. And then once you aren’t on ESPN then it doesn’t really matter honestly if it is ESPN news, ESPNU, or ESPN2, if you ask me.
And if you preferred the ESPN time slot prior, then you would have been up against the national Giants / Cowboys Thanksgiving game, which provides you zero exposure. Sorry but this was not a well thought out complaint. Just Jerry feeding his agenda that ESPN has a bias against the Big East.

I also don’t understand the complaint about the matchup. You want the better matchup. It guarantees you a quality opponent on your schedule and if you win, it normally guarantees more opportunities for additional quality wins after that.
If we were starting with Siena or Nebraska we would be complaining that we got stuck with a game that hurts our SOS. How do I know that?, because if we lose the Memphis game and end up playing those teams in the losers bracket, people will be the griping.

Go out and beat Memphis and make this tournament impactful for the NCAA resume. Go win the tournament with the best 3 wins you can possibly attain. There is no value in winning the tournament when you don’t compile quality wins. For example the Paradise Jam everyone always brings up that we won. They beat Nevada, Garner Webb, and Illinois St. In the Wooden Classic they beat Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and a Miami team that turned out to not be anywhere close to the top 25.

And don’t get me started on the missed opportunities against Washington, Oklahoma, Florida, Long Beach St, Rhode Island, Oregon, and Ohio State.

We tend to beat ourselves more than teams beat us. However a win is a win and stop making dumb mistakes over and over

I believe the Fort Myers Tip-off is a Fox tournament not ESPN .
Yes, unless ESPN is selling off the inventory (doubtful). But why let facts get in the way of a good rant.

ESPN knows it needs BE teams in those slots because we're likely drawing better ratings than the alternatives. There are only so many solid brands name to fill the inventory.

They can "stick it" or give the BE less than optimal positioning but it's bad business to leave BE schools out in favor of (pick any of 100 schools that aren't part of Feast Week).

Feast Week has become too much...there are way too many events/multi team tourneys now than ever before. It used to be special. It does give lesser programs a chance to get these games. For example with what was previously the old spice now espn events invite the MAAC always gets a team in.

That’s our fan perspective. The other teams never do anything special, it’s always we were great or we sucked that determined the outcome. Fans of all teams talk as if the opponent had little say in the matter. I'll bet when we walk out of the arena after a big conference win, most times the other fan base thinks they beat themselves rather than we beat them.

Talk about a well timed article, ESPN didn't put Samuel's shot in the top 10. Somehow a behind the back pass, to a wide open player, beat out his game winner for the 10 spot.

At least we were Feast Week Eligible.

Pikiell deserves major credit for turning around his program. But his" OOC scheduling to date has been nothing short of an embarrassment to the school.
If Pike has turned "around his program," their OOC scheduling to date" is extremely secondary.

I am not as enamored by Carino as most on this board, but I agree with him on this. This ESPN tournament in Orlando in an "arena" that seats 5000, and with its field and ESPN News TV coverage, really looks minor-league.

Maui Gym is no more than 2k

Bad boy mowers is a small capacity

Isn‘t it because the tournaments out in Portland are bigger and get the prime ESPN slots?

Seton Hall is responsible for negotiating their way into these MTEs. Some years we have been in the high profile events such as the Maui Invitational and the Battle for Atlantis. During those events you get the prime time coverage when you play against the best.

All you need to do is compare the fields in Portland to the teams in Orlando.
Did you want the TV executives to prioritize:
Seton Hall, Memphis, Florida St, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Stanford, and Ole Miss

Over

Duke, UNC, Villanova, Florida, Xavier, Iowa St, UConn, Alabama, Gonzaga, Purdue, Michigan St. and Oregon.

We can’t seriously be saying we got screwed here?!?! Sometimes you need to accept where you are in the pecking order and go make the most of the situation.

Just seems odd to me that a huge media corporation would sponsor a second-tier tournament. No argument that Phil Knight is more impressive. If the wheels were reversed, would Nike put on a secondary event?
Could games on Thursday have been on ESPNU or shared with FoxSports?
Imagine our game Sunday will again be relegated to ESPNNews... as it should.

I’m still confused. Why wouldn’t they?

They have the arena, they have the network to broadcast, and now they have content to fill those time slots.

It’s not like a major car sponsor is wasting their money on a second tier tournament.

Also why would ESPN sell off that content and the broadcast rights to their competitor in Fox? Why would Fox want to pay for content advertising a location owned by their competition? Why would Fox want to pay for content to put on FS1 that was going to go up against the same football slots that were locked in for that Thursday?

The national audience wasn’t turning away Thursday or this Sunday to watch Seton Hall instead of football. So as a Seton Hall fan why does it matter which channel the game is on, unless you don’t get an ESPNNews or ESPNU?

The MAAC always gets a team in because the MAAC is a co-sponsor of the event.

What's odd about the fact that ESPN wants to own it's own content? They own and thus control many of these Feast Week events (Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Maui et al) and they don't have to pay out media rights to air the games. Have you seen some of the fields across the plethora of tournaments held over the past 10 days or so?

Not every tournament can be like the Phil Knight tournaments (which are a total NIke flex) or the Battle 4 Atlantis that we played in a few years ago. There are still NCAA guidelines regarding scheduling that must be adhered to (it's not like ESPN can invite Duke, Kansas, Villanova, UCLA, Ohio State, Kentucky, Gonzaga and San Diego State to the same tournament year after year).

I belied Seton Hall's Sunday game against Siena is slated for ESPN2.
This is correct. That time slot for the tournament's third-place game was scheduled long before anybody knew who was playing in it.

You’re missing it … ESPN owns most of these tournaments, and almost every one of the non-Jan 1 and beyond bowl games. Just because this is the only tournament that carries their name doesn‘t mean it’s the only one they have a vested interest in.
