Seton Hall 73 Providence 57
Before I break down the game I would be negligent if I didn't make mention of Angel Delgado's accomplishments in his 3 plus years at the Hall.
We all know how good Angel is on the court. That's a given. But what some do not know is how much this young man has grown since he first came on the campus in South Orange.
Angel has matured by leaps and bounds and because of that it's easy to forget that he came to the Hall with a reputation of being a difficult kid both on and off the court.
There were also questions about his ability to take care of his academics, both in high school and then moving on to college.
Angel Delgado answered those questions in spades and he was honored Wednesday night for his accomplishments on the court, specifically for breaking the career rebounding record in conference games. But moving forward he'll have garnered an even bigger prize come April when he is honored with his graduating class when he's handed his sheepskin.
Angel Delgado has become a player who some day will see his number hanging from the rafters in Walsh Gymnasium.
Now to the game.......
This was an impressive victory as Providence was coming off a streak of 4 wins in 5 games with the lone defeat at the hands of Villanova.
Once the Pirates broke open the game late in the first half only the final score was in doubt.
Let's talk about that run. It started at the 8:03 mark with a 3 point bomb from Khadeen Carrington as the shot clock was about to expire and 19 points later it ended with another 3 points from Desi Rodriquez with 4:03 left on the clock.
What I thought was most unusual was it was preceded by what looked like an emotional boost for the Friars as Rodriquez missed a thunderous dunk attempt and then Providence had a run out leading to a 3 from the left corner.
That's a 5 point swing in 5 seconds
Back to the man that started the run, Carrington. The motto on this board in the last 10 days has been a simple one. As goes Deeno so goes the Pirates.
Truer words could not have been spoken in this game.
Carrington's stat line was one befitting a pre-season all conference player. 23 points on 9-14 shooting, 7 assists to 1 turnover, 3 steals and a block.
But just as important as his offensive stats is what he did to his star counterpart Kyron Cartwright.
Cartwright, the engine that runs the Friars offense came into the contest averaging 11 points and over 6 assists per game. He left with no points, 2 assist, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls.
Chalk up one for Deeno and the hope for Pirate fans that there will be many encores to follow.
When is rest too much rest?
Well when you're Friar coach Ed Cooley.
Cooley noted in the post game he could not remember the last time his team had 8 days off and he stated that as a major reason for his team playing their "worst game of the season."
That said, he did compliment his opponent noting that you don't beat a team with that talent by losing every 50/50 ball in the game.
He further added that when Carrington plays like he did the Hall could beat most any team in the country.
The professor did it again.
During the last 4 timeouts in the first half Kevin Willard's team came out in a different defense.
Did it work? Well, Providence's shooting stats in that half say yes it did.
Getting back to the 19-0 run. As it was happening those 4 minutes were as electric as Hall fans have seen all year. But then because of that and the fact Providence never made a serious run the rest of the game that electricity disappeared and the second half turned into a ho hum affair for the Pirate faithful.
Question?
Did SHU target Valdir Manuel attend the game?
Answer.
Yes he did and he brought along his HS teammate Al-Amir Dawes with him as both sat behind the Seton Hall bench.
Love Ish and want to see him on the court as much as possible. But he has to stop getting fouls, many of them silly early in the game.
Sanogo provides the Hall with more than just great defense. He is an energy guy and is instrumental in getting the team off to good starts, which was a problem until he regained his position in the starting line-up.
We professed our love for Angel Delgado. Now some criticism.
Yes, do take the occasional mid range jump shot despite the fact that the defense will give that to you all game long. You earned the right to do that occasionally, with the key word being occasionally. But not 7 times. Especially when the result is seeing only one hit the bottom of the net.
Shout out to Myles Cale and not for the reason so many of us would have expected pre-season.
Reader TACT, who sits next to me noted that Cale looked like Ish on the court playing ferocious defense and he could not have been more correct.
Great job by the freshmen knowing his place and doing the dirty work that does not show up in the stat sheet.
Groundhog day part 'I give up'.
Again, another bank is open shot. This one was not from range, nor from the corner. This time the banker came in the form of a jump hook from 12 feet out in the paint over the defense from Providence's leading scorer Rodney Bollock.
Loved seeing Desi in the middle near the foul line when the Friars went into their zone D. The few times it happened Desi was able to turn it into positive plays from that spot on the court.
There he becomes a triple threat. Shoot, penetrate or dish.
Attendance wasn't great but in comparison to past years 8343 for a decent mid week Big East match-up in late January isn't too bad.
Sock it to me update:
After its 'stinky' showing two weeks prior the holiday socks got one more chance to make amends. They did so in stellar 'fashion', so they will again make an appearance next week against the Marquette Warriors.
How many players can go the first 8:45 into a game before they get their first rebound and then finish with 14?
I'll leave that answer up to our readers.
How do you jump start a player who is having difficulties shooting from range?
Well, in the Pirates case you have Carrington get three easy run outs at the start of the game. And then watch him hit a bomb to ignite the 19-0 run that broke open the contest.
Staying with Deeno.
Houston has theirs. And now South Orange has a younger version.
In case no one noticed Carrington is now sporting a beard for the first time in his career and Pirate fans can only hope it does for him what it did for Houston's PG, the original Beard, James Harden.
No one is harder during the game than Ed Cooley in the conference on refs. But in the post game he said with strong conviction that the men in stripes in the Big East are far and away the best whistles in the nation and it's not even close. Adding that every other conference would kill to have what the Big East has.
Seton Hall has not done well this season protecting their defensive boards while Providence has been a good offensive rebounding team. But for this one game the Friars were only able to collect 8 offensive caroms on 35 missed shots. 15 from the arc which are easier to gather for the shooting team.
Final thought.
Seton Hall needed an easy win against a good opponent to get their mojo back. For this one time, because of the Pirates Khadeen Carrington playing his best game of the season, mission accomplished.
And now on the Villanova where the Pirates can play a nothing to lose game with the chance to stun the college basketball world.
