I'm praying that our men's basketball team has the sense not to kneel during the National Anthem this season. If any players do, I plan on being very vocal and will never attend another game again. Its bad enough that some of our players families don't give standing ovations to the members of the Military that we honor during games.

Wow, from reading some recent threads I see the haters are flexing their muscles after not having too much to bitch about this past summer.

There's just some people on this board that will never be satisfied and will always look under every Pirate rock to find something to complain about!

SHUMike, you are very confused.

Let me explain the way of the new world:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

And people such as college administrators and presidents, coaches, TV executives and discussion board big shots are terrified of losing their high paying jobs and/or the special access they enjoy.

They all work for the new Ministry of Truth.

Wayward individuals will be destroyed.

Your choices:

A. Bend over and accept it. (Money over Country.)
B. Fight like hell and tell the truth regardless of who does not like it.

I choose B.

Regardless of my love for any particular team or school, I would never support a team or a school that acquiesces to any disrespect for the flag.

News Flash: I also have constitutional rights.

I hope sports fans all over the nation will start to put country above sports. No violence. No name-calling. Just stay home.

Last night the SF QB led a high school team in Oakland to lay down during the national anthem. What a world.

Ah, reminders of how much I miss

Being the sole custodian of the truth is a helluva responsibility

Who is taking away your constitutional rights?

Through-out the history of this country there have countless protests against various injustices. And looking back, many have been justified and also have created change.

What complicates things today is that we have evolved into a mega-celebrity society where the voices of sports, entertainment and Hollywood seem to matter more. And its exacerbated by social media, TV, cable, etc. Yes, there were celebrities that spoke out historically, but they were mostly personally committed to that cause (i.e. Muhammad Ali).

Now we have to determine if a celebrity is really committed to a cause or if they are just seeking attention to get personal attention or maintain relevancy. (Going viral...). Time will tell which ones are being done for altruistic reasons and which ones for selfish and self-promotional ones.

Actors, who are abusive to their own families, telling me who to vote for; athletes that can't string a coherent sentence together telling me why I should support their cause; celebrity social media moments about a humanitarian message with no content behind (an Internet Hollywood set of sorts)....Excuse me if I let out a big yawn.

So thus far we've had sitting, kneeling, locking arms, laying down for the anthem...good to see some of these athletes have at least have some limited creativity.

There are a lot of good people, great leaders out there doing meaningful work, who are committed to making things better. I'll take my lead from them.

If SHUMike will not attend games if he sees our players doing this, why bash him for it? That is his feeling and there is nothing wrong with him feeling that way.

Incidently, a school or team can demand that their players stand. Schools that are private and football teams are not government institutions. The Constitution prohibits the government from making any laws to abridge speech. But that does not extend to private companies like Universities. If Seton Hall demands that the players will stand and they choose differently, action can be taken.

The 49'ers can punish CK if they chose to do so. They choose not to do anything.

The optics of someone sitting for the Anthem looks lackadaisical & disrespectful. The optics of fans "walking out" on a player or players KNEELING during the Anthem as they represent a CATHOLIC University looks just silly

Some of the attack responses here are exactly the reason why I used lines from George Orwell's "1984."

In some minds, expressing patriotism and loving your country equals racism and/or xenophobia.

That's the job of the Ministry of Truth- certain statements, even if true, are not allowed.

--If somebody is involved with police and you detail their extensive criminal history, well then, you're a racist.

--If you think it's wrong to borrow $50 billion each year and send that taxpayer money out of the country as foreign aid, you're a racist.

--If you detail the fact that some cities are in deep debt, are facing big budget shortfalls, are closing schools and laying off teachers, yet that city's mayor is jumping for joy because of the flood of illegal aliens and refugees, again, you are a racist. Someone will cut and past a picture of Archie Bunker to illustrate the point.

The list can go on and on. It's a very effective technique to silence your opponent.

Well, I don't play that game. I will not be intimidated or silenced.

Now I'm going to post an image that will deeply offend some of you:

People have a right to non-violent protest.

People who disagree also have the right to respond in a non-violent way.

The main problem we're having in our country right now is the tsunami of lies we hear every day from both sides of this police and criminal justice issue.

People do not want to hear the truth.

Dan, can we move all this National Anthem stuff to another board? Off the Ship? Off the site? Off the Internet? Anywhere else?

I know there are important issues being debated within them, but just my personal opinion, they're getting in the way of some topics that are more pertinent to the purpose of this board.

Also, do you see us landing another '17 recruit, or getting official visits from the '18 fab five? ;)

I agree.

Starting tomorrow all anthem posts will be transferred to the Off The Ship Board.

Please post any new thoughts there. New posts or threads here will be deleted.

This story on Pirate Hoops Chat has run its course.

From these 1984 comments you'd think that Obama decreed all citizens must kneel during the anthem, not the reality that a minority of the media has defended an individual (and now small group) doing so against an angry, reactionary tidal wave. I'll give you one thing, though, The Two-Minute Hate has been upgraded to 24 hours

During the Giants game it was mentioned that players decided to stand rather than kneel during the Anthem.

Instead, Giants players either met or are going to meet with the NYPD. (I'm not sure which.)

I thought it was a great idea. There's nothing like a face-to-face to seriously discuss an important issue.

There's hardly any listening going on. Both sides need to listen. Discussions, listening and learning can hopefully lead to solutions.

I hope other teams in the NFL and other sports in other cities will follow the lead of Giants. (I would keep all politicians out of the initial meetings. Most of them create problems because they spend 24/7 thinking about re-election.)

Here's an article about the Giants from last week.
