RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) fired a 3-over-par, 75, to lead the BIG EAST champion Seton Hall women's golf team to a 16th place standing following the first round of the Raleigh Regional of the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships on Thursday.

Kruse began her round with six straight pars before double-bogeying the 16th hole. She bounced back with six straight pars again before bogeying holes #5 and #6 and birdying #7 to finish at 3-over-par. The senior is currently tied for 34th place among 96 individual golfers.

Collectively, Seton Hall shot a 21-over-par, 309, in round one. The Pirates entered the day as the 16th ranked team in the field of 18, and that's exactly where they are after 18 holes. Seton Hall has a four-stroke lead over Wichita State and a 19-stroke lead over New Jersey neighbor Fairleigh Dickinson.

Heading into the tournament, a reachable goal was to out play one-third of the field. Although the 15th place team, the College of Charleston, has a five-stroke lead on the Pirates, a jump all the way to 11th place would only require a seven-stroke improvement for Seton Hall.

"I'm not disappointed, but I'm not thrilled either with our performance today," said head coach Sara Doell. "With high wind, I thought we did a good job of adjusting as the round went on. Now, with some of the first round jitters out of the way, I think our scores will fall tomorrow. Today was a good first step."

With a large storm developing off the North Carolina coast, conditions became noticeably windier as the round wore on.

Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) fired her best round in over a month with a 5-over-par, 77, on Thursday. The junior used a strong start to fuel her round. She was even-par through her first nine holes, registering birdies on holes #10 and #14.

"We had a feeling that a good round was coming from Karlie," Doell said. "She had a really good week of practicing leading up. We knew she was due."

Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) and Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) shot a 6-over-par, 78, and a 7-over-par, 79, respectively. McClure really had only one poor hole, a "7" on the par-4, 18th hole. But she came back strong with back-to-back birdies to begin her back nine. Pantelas had two double-bogeys during an otherwise very strong first round. The freshman birdied hole #16.

Rounding out the Pirates' scoring on Thursday was junior Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio), who finished with a 10-over-par, 82. She had two birdies, but also a double-bogey on hole #9 and a costly "7" on the par-4, 13th hole.

Seton Hall's tee times for round two are the same as they were today, but the Pirates' order will be different based on today's performances. Tenhundfeld will get the team started at 9:09 a.m. on Friday, followed by Pantelas at 9:19 a.m., McClure at 9:27 a.m., Zabrosky at 9:36 a.m. and finally, Kruse at 9:45 a.m.

The Pirates will once again be playing with competitors from both Wichita State and Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Raleigh Regional is being played at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina and is hosted by North Carolina State University. A par-72 course measuring 6,381 yards, Lonnie Poole has unique features that set it apart from other courses in the region. It represents the evolution in golf course architecture towards sustainability; a golf course that fits into and protects the natural environment. As with Bethpage Black, Bandon Dunes, Whistling Straits, and Pine Valley, it leans heavily on traditional Scottish designs while accommodating the natural landscape.

The Raleigh Regional is a 54-hole event played over three days beginning Thursday. On Wednesday, the teams played a practice round.

For the first time in 13 years the regional format has changed. Instead of three regions representing 24 teams and the top eight in each region moving on to nationals, there are four regions with 18 teams each and the top six will move on. The championship finals will be held May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida and will be hosted by the University of South Florida.

Daily recaps, interviews with all five competitors as well as head coach Sara Doell, and photo galleries will be available via Regional Central at SHUpirates.com. Golfstat.com is providing live stats throughout the three-day event. Follow the Seton Hall women's golf team all week on twitter at @SHU_WGolf for up-to-the-minute information.
