So I have spoken to several people about why we don't play as many night games and a primary reason is the lights can't be on at night due to complaints from residents on Widen Place.

Ironically enough the resident who led the complaints and chaired the complaints from the others on Widen Place to the town of South Orange...Seton Hall Sports Management's own Larry McCarthy. Terrible a employee especially one that is involved with sports/athletics.

The university really needs to tell the village to stfu. I'd love to know if the rules they apply to us also apply to others.

This is what happens when SHU plays nice. Anybody feels they can mess with the school and suffer no consequences.

Those residents moved next to a university athletic field, and now they complain. All those games are completed before 10 p.m. Those lights are on for games probably about 20-25 nights year. There is no justification for this.

I repeat, yet again, SHU should not pay any money to SO that it's not legally obligated to pay. That means they should stop paying those payments in lieu of taxes. Are they legally obligated to pay?

If not, keep the money.

Agreed! The university needs to stick up for themselves!

I love people who purchase a home near a university and then complain that the university operates the way it does. Seton Hall has been playing night soccer games for at least ten years so this is not a new development.

While this may be true about SO residents complaining not sure how true about affecting schedules. Look at men's soccer, plenty of home night games. Majority of weeknight games are played at night, on weekend usually during the day, which makes sense.

Unfortunately people are going to complain.

1996, the men's and women's soccer teams each have five 7 pm home starts on their respective schedules.

All are weekday games except the men twice play on Saturday night- Oct. 3 vs. St. John's and Oct. 24 vs. Butler.

From past experience, those games will all be completed before 9 pm, unless they play OT.

Last season, the baseball team played four 6 pm Friday games.

So judging from last season, the lights will be on for SHU games for about 15 of 365 nights of the year.

For residents to complain is a joke. If they go to sleep prior to 9 pm they can easily pull down the shades and close the curtains.

I'm not sure what the cutoff time is for the PA, but they usually don't announce who scored a goal. They have, however, announced the starting lineup. Very strange.

Those people like to manufacture reasons to complain against SHU. I'm sure in the fall somebody is going to complain about the noise from tennis balls hitting the rackets. Fortunately, the new tennis courts will be on county property.

They remind me of people who move right next to an airport and then complain about the sound of jet engines.

Let's be real here.....if you live two blocks from Newark / Ivy Hill you should be asking the university to leave those lights on at all times. Unless getting mugged by gang bangers and having your car stolen is your thing.

PA system? Hell, ever listen to a professional women's tennis match? :)

You guys have to remember that it's not just game days.... with multiple teams using the field, the lights are probably on just about every night for practices, especially when the days get shorter. Quite honestly, I think it's surprising that SHU was able to get lights installed in the first place.

Location, location, location! You want quiet neighbors who don't make noise, play games, talk or play music? Move next to a cemetery! If you move next to a university and athletic field you have to reasonably expect college students and games! There are two sets of rules in South Orange, one set for Seton Hall and on set for everyone else.

How late do they practice? I doubt any team is out there practicing with the lights on later than 7 pm. Most practices are probably done by late afternoon, especially after it starts to get cold.

Daylight savings time doesn't start until November 1. There's only one home game after that.

As previously mentioned, SO residents look for problems to manufacture. Why don't they focus on the police doing their job and keeping people safe?
