And lots of money paid to players doesn’t guarantee much anymore. Rutgers gets “shredded” by Ohio State. Carino’s word not mine.

This post isn’t meant to gloat just a reminder to all that paying players who are kids hundreds of thousands dollars will have its own problems. These kids are very high on themselves. Not sure the rich kids will listen to their coach.

If I'm a ru fans I'm looking for a sweet sixteen team with 2 players making 1 million plus . If not it was not worth the investment especially if they are one and done .

As good as their big 2 are and pretty solid cast, gotta remember they are freshman

If you think the mood on this board is bad, stop on over to the rutgers site. There are threads screaming for Pike to be fired. Another states that they have pampered, paid athletes that are not coachable due to their large paychecks. Others cite poor recruiting and low nil. Damn, sounds familiar doesn't it??
Unfortunately, that mood will likely soften after Wednesday--but one can hope--

It's a tough thing to make work with 2 freshmen that really don't mesh with Pikiell's defensive style. They will have ups and downs and probably have some exciting wins at home. But to make a Sweet 16 they need to play better defense and have a more diverse offense.

Whether they get there or not, was still a worthy risk to take and if Harper and Bailey are NBA stars down the road, it will be a benefit for Rutgers.

Freshman flush with cash and an eye on next year.
That doesn’t mean though they are selfish players or the root of any and all wrongs.

All these kids have an eye on next year. And all think they will be flush with cash even if they aren’t.

Signing two teenagers most never guarantees success on that level (Sweet 16 or better). You still do it everyday of the week. It has generated enormous positive attention for RU basketball in this state and beyond.

And to Fish’s point these kids both look like future NBA players, perhaps regulars that carve out careers, perhaps even better as hard as that is to do. Huge benefits with that too.

I think you are a little to sanguine about a kid getting a pile of money. Few can handle it. My source for this view? The intuition of Jay Wright and Nick Sabam. Time will tell if the RU phenomenon are among that small group.

Many of them have been getting significant money for years at the college level. Just a different way. Whether they can handle it and whether it impacts the team is an individualized issue, IMO. We’ve seen it both ways here.

RUs big man situation is worse than ours. An all time fumble that ruined the legacy of Ace and Harper

Rutgers might not be a top 25 team, but those two freshman energize a fan base and create excitement every game they play.

I would love to have some flash and high flyers on our offensively challenged team

Freshman haven’t been. And the money was a slither of what it is today. Michigan giving their QB $10 million is a real sign of far this has gone.

The $10 million absolutely. The football QB money absolutely.

For most of even high major D-1 it’s higher but I’m not sure much how much in most instances. Or in the past it had to come via different routes like cars, jobs, housing and the like.

You think Kadary can handle the $1 mm give it take they gave him?

They got shredded by a team with a similar budget. We got shredded by Monmouth.

It was just a different world and different type of compensation with strings attached.

And I quote Penny Hardaway from the movie Blue Chips. And I am leaving out a lot of the back and forth. But basically goes…

“If I leave, will my mom lose her house and her job?”

Nick Nolte responds “Better be at practice Monday.”

No idea. Who knows who is advising him. Some schools have financial advisors helping these kids and families.
I think we are talking at each other. This has little to do with money management. It has all to do with what large sums of money will do to the coach ability of teens and those barely out of their teens. We have different views. Time will tell. But Jay Wright, Tony Bennett and others voted and they voted with their feet.

And that means what in a conversation of what money will do to kids playing sports?
You’re talking like the money is the issue. RU and OSU probably are on par as far as money goes. One team played much better than the other. Why are you blaming the team who didn’t play well on money? Sometimes teams just don’t play well. Sometimes one team just has another teams number. Why is this game about money and players not handling the money well. Your words not Carinos. Ohio State is paying players handsomely too. You can’t say this is a reminder paying kids is a problem because RU had a bad game when OSU is paying kids and played well. This is just another RU obsession post because the logic makes no sense. I’d love to know how this applies to RU and not OSU?

I wouldn’t doubt Ohio state pays more than RU because their alums are loaded and engaged in sports there. So the team probably paying more won. If you were comparing a team who is paying much more than another, let’s say seton hall more than Monmouth the logic would make sense.

With the money comes pressure, with the pressure comes booing, with the booing comes self doubt and more losing. Many more will fail than succeed. Going from no money to where we are today is a recipe for failure. Most college kids with money will start to think they are special. I like what our coach is doing, just need to give him time.

Coaches are facing a major problem that they never had before, their power over the players has been hamstrung. The quality player, if not happy for any reason, can just do his own thing & transfer to another program and get his 6 figures from somebody else. Coaches like PJ and Bobby Knight could never survive in this disastrous P4P age. Sha is facing the same challenge with his approach to the game

Tough love is a thing of the past. The ridiculousness of AAU for the last few decades has pampered players to the Nth degree. Most players are used to jumping from team to team, coach to coach. They’re taught at a young age if you’re talented enough you can just go play for someone else if you want. Nothing about loyalty or having to stick with it facing adversity. The no sit out rule is worse than NIL in my opinion. Players don’t have to face challenges a coach presents them. They can just run away to someone else who makes an offer that will pamper them more.

Every blue blood in the country has top 25 players every single year and many times they may only win 1 or 2 games in march or sometimes lose 1st round

From what little I've seen of RU, Bailey and Harper are studs. They'll both likely to be top 10 picks next June.

The problem is their supporting cast looks a lot like ours. We're seeing in real time how tough it is to win if you don't have the players.

And with the exception of the one loss in Georgia, they're losing to very good teams.
