In a huge body blow to Labor Unions, the Supreme Court declared all public sector labor unions a right to work state. What this means is that although a worker is essentially reaping the benefits of what the union has bargained for them, they will not be compelled to pay union dues. To me, this is a horrible decision that will decrease the power of the working man and will lead to many labor unions diminished power and ability to gain employees pay raises and benefits.

I don't think you should be forced to join a union; I also don't think you should be bound by their decisions either. Can't have it both ways, heck, maybe you can get better without them??

I will start this by saying I am not a big fan of unions, especially public sector unions, as I really do not understand there place/need in the current day society. But guess that is a different debate.

But my question, does this ruling also apply to private sector unions?

No it does not apply to private sector unions from what I believe.

I know a few teachers that are afraid of their NJEA rep who has told them bluntly if you don't do what we want and get into a problem at your school we won't do a good job of representing you. If you do what we want we will be there for you. That is the kind of union representation that noone needs and is one of the big problems unions have and what lead to union members complaining about all of this. I do believe that unions can protect individual workers as well but they've done a really bad job of late. Should be interesting to see where this leads.

Unions are good thing if their leadership is reasonable and if the management they are negotiating with is equally reasonable.

I have personally been involved in both environments and when there is reasonableness on both sides the outcomes are good for everyone.
