NEW YORK, N.Y. - Seton Hall senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) has been chosen as the winner of the 2014-15 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award, as selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee.
The awards are given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport who have been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following year and who have demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution or the community.
Manthorpe and St. John's baseball's Shawn Heide will each receive a $5,000 scholarship, which may be applied to postgraduate study. The award is named for Michael Tranghese, the BIG EAST's first full-time employee who served as commissioner of the conference from 1990 to 2009 and embodied leadership and dedication from the leagues inception.
Manthorpe, who was also named the BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in mid-February, will be pursuing postgraduate work at Fairleigh Dickinson University as the Volleyball Graduate Assistant.
Manthorpe boasts a 3.743 cumulative GPA in her major of marketing and sport management. She is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic team honoree (2012-2014) and was a part of back-to-back-to-back Seton Hall Volleyball teams which earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award (2012-14). At Seton Hall, Manthorpe was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society in 2013, and is a six-time Dean's List honoree.
In the community of South Orange, N.J., Manthorpe has contributed multiple hours of service which have included partner organizations such as The Don Guanella School, Toys For Tots, Marple Education Center School, St. Joseph's School, Dove and Holy Cross.
On the court, Manthorpe was the first player in Seton Hall in history to earn postseason All-BIG EAST honors for all four seasons (2011-14). Nationally, Manthorpe was a 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Honorable Mention, and led the nation in triple-doubles with 10 in 2013, and eight in 2012. Regionally, the senior was a 2014 AVCA All-Region First Team member. In 2014, Manthorpe was a unanimous selection to the First Team All-BIG EAST and was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. Among weekly accolades, she led the conference in total assists. She was also an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2012 and earned Second Team honors in 2011 and 2013.
As a co-captain and four year starter, Manthorpe led the Pirates to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2014. She finished her volleyball career as one of four players in program history to tally more than 4,000 assists and played 476 sets, recorded 888 kills, 4,199 assists and 1,476 digs.
