NEW YORK, N.Y. - Seton Hall senior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) has been chosen as the winner of the 2014-15 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award, as selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee.

The awards are given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport who have been admitted to a degree-granting or professional program for the following year and who have demonstrated leadership through excellence in academic credentials, athletic performance and depth of commitment to service within the institution or the community.

Manthorpe and St. John's baseball's Shawn Heide will each receive a $5,000 scholarship, which may be applied to postgraduate study. The award is named for Michael Tranghese, the BIG EAST's first full-time employee who served as commissioner of the conference from 1990 to 2009 and embodied leadership and dedication from the leagues inception.

Manthorpe, who was also named the BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in mid-February, will be pursuing postgraduate work at Fairleigh Dickinson University as the Volleyball Graduate Assistant.

Manthorpe boasts a 3.743 cumulative GPA in her major of marketing and sport management. She is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic team honoree (2012-2014) and was a part of back-to-back-to-back Seton Hall Volleyball teams which earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award (2012-14). In 2013-14, Manthorpe and the Pirate volleyball squad received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). At Seton Hall, Manthorpe was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society in 2013, and is a six-time Dean's List honoree.

In the community of South Orange, N.J., Manthorpe has contributed multiple hours of service which have included partner organizations such as The Don Guanella School, Toys For Tots, Marple Education Center School, St. Joseph's School, Dove and Holy Cross.

On the court, Manthorpe was the first player in Seton Hall in history to earn postseason All-BIG EAST honors for all four seasons (2011-14). Nationally, Manthorpe was a 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Honorable Mention, and led the nation in triple-doubles with 10 in 2013, and eight in 2012. Regionally, the senior was a 2014 AVCA All-Region First Team member. In 2014, Manthorpe was a unanimous selection to the First Team All-BIG EAST and was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. Among weekly accolades, she led the conference in total assists. She was also an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2012 and earned Second Team honors in 2011 and 2013.

As a co-captain and four year starter, Manthorpe led the Pirates to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2014. Among other statistical highlights, Manthorpe was the only player in Seton Hall history to garner more than 4,000 assists and 1,400 digs and to earn a triple-double. She finished her volleyball career as one of four players in program history to tally more than 4,000 assists and played 476 sets, recorded 888 kills, 4,199 assists and 1,476 digs.

Most recently, Manthorpe was named Senior Female Co-Athlete of the Year at Seton Hall's Fourth Annual Senior Awards Banquet.

Heide has made 35 appearances as a relief pitcher with a 5-1 record in his St. John's career. The righty has totaled 32 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work. In 2014, Heide went undefeated at 3-0 in relief with 20 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work. This past year, Heide appeared in 17 games with a 3-4 record with wins over at Butler and Saint Peter's. He was a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team (2012, 2013 and 2014).Heide also earned the BIG EAST Academic Sport Excellence Award for Baseball in 2011-13.

Off the field, Heide boasts a 3.91 cumulative GPA toward his bachelor of science in marketing and is a member of St. John's honors program. The Boston, Mass., native was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He served as part of St. John's prestigious President's Society as a cabinet member. Heide had seven consecutive semesters above a 3.7 GPA and was a part of the St. John's Peter J. Tobin School of Business' Dean's List in 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14. He was a member of the Tobin School of Business' Sigma Lota Epsilon honor society since Fall 2012 and has been a part of the Tobin School of Business Marketing Club. Heide was the team representative for the baseball program for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) since 2012 and has committed countless hours of community service.

The Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2014-15 academic year. In addition to this award, which was introduced for the 2010-11 academic year, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10 member institutions) have been named as the winners of the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
