Game 1: Seton Hall 8, Manhattan 0 (5)
How it Happened
- The Pirate bats came out of the gates swinging, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came home on an RBI single from Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) which allowed Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) to score. Wingo would then steal second on a play which allowed Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.)to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. Next, Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) singled home Wingo to give the Pirates a 3-0 advantage.
- Three more Pirates crossed the plate in the third. Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) would come home on a double steal attempt where Wingo was thrown out at second. Later in the inning, Perez found a gap in the outfield for a two-run single to bring the lead up to 6-0.
- Carr allowed the first two runners to reach base in the fourth as the Japsers tried to gain some momentum. However, Carr would record a strikeout, flyout and popout to escape the jam.
- The Pirate offense rewarded Carr's escapism in the circle with another run in the bottom half of the frame, as Allen lined a double to left-center field to score Hill from first.
- Seton Hall put the game away in the bottom of the fifth as Perez hit a ball off the left field wall to plate Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) and give the Pirates a run rule victory.
- This marks Seton Hall's third run rule victory so far this season.
- Carr has now allowed just one earned run over her last 12.1 innings of work.
- Gilbert recorded three hits in a game for the second time in her career, and the first since doing so against DePaul on April 9, 2022.
- Perez now has back-to-back games with multiple RBI.
How it Happened
- The Jaspers jumped on top in the top of the first inning after Gabriella Mazzotta scored on a wild pitch.
- The Pirates would answer in a big way, scoring all nine of their runs in the second inning. The first run came across on a Perez double as she knocked in her fourth run of the doubleheader. Two batters later, Perez would cross home on a groundout from Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to give Seton Hall a 2-1 advantage.
- Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) would plate Arruda on an infield single, then come around herself to score after an errant throw from shortstop went down the right field line.
- Later in the inning, Wingo would single to centerfield to make it a 5-1 Pirates lead before Gilbert laced a double to the right field wall which plated two more. The score would increase to 8-1 after Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and two batters later Colonnetta would draw a bases loaded walk to cap the nine-run rally.
- Manhattan got a run back in the fourth to make it a 9-2 game, but the Pirates were a single away from a second straight run rule victory in the fifth. With Caye at second base and one out, Hill and Allen were each retired to extend them game to the sixth.
- Manhattan capitalized on its new opportunity, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to draw within two runs at 9-7.
- With the tying run coming to the plate in the seventh inning, Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) was called into the circle to pick up the final two outs to earn the save.
- All nine Pirate starters in the batting order reached base safely, and eight of the nine recorded at least one base hit.
- The save for Smith was the fourth of her career and the first by a Pirate pitcher this season.
- Across the doubleheader, seven different Pirates drove in at least one run.
- Gilbert now has five multi-RBI games so far this season after having three as a freshman in 2022.
- Perez has knocked in six runs over her last three games, including four in Wednesday's doubleheader alone.
- Seton Hall's nine-run inning was the most it has scored in one frame since plating 10 runs in the fifth inning of a game against Army on March 6, 2020.
- The 24 hits across the doubleheader are the most by the Pirates since banging out 28 combined hits in a double dip against UMBC and Saint Joseph's on Feb. 20, 2022
