No. 15 Pirates Fight No. 24 UConn to a Physical 0-0 Draw
Pirates outshoot Huskies 10-4, Molina registers third clean sheet
STORRS, C.T. – No. 15 Seton Hall men's soccer registered 10 shots and a clean sheet, but drew 0-0 in a BIG EAST matchup against No. 24 UConn.
The first half was physical and scoreless, featuring 11 fouls and three yellow cards. In the second half, Seton Hall stressed UConn's defenses to the limit. The Hall had eight corner kicks and outshot UConn 9-3 in the second half, but the strong Husky defense held the line. A late Pirate corner turned Husky attack in the dying moments ended in a save from
Matias Molina as time expired, securing the 0-0 draw for the Pirates.
With the draw, The Hall moves to 7-1-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in BIG EAST play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half felt was befitting of a match between nationally-ranked conference rivals. The two teams played a very physical, scoreless first half. They combined for 11 fouls, three yellow cards and zero shots on goal. Both teams registered a single shot, but strong defensive play quashed many attacking chances during the first half.
In the second half, the Pirates offensive press increased beyond the form they ended the first half in. In the 63rd minute, a
Til Kauschke header off the foot of
Tim Strobeck just sailed over the crossbar on a strong attacking chance.
In the 74th minute,
Jack Kossoudji launched a shot on goal from inside the box, forcing a save from the Huskies' goalkeeper. A flurry of corner kicks soon followed, leading to a dangerous 81st minute volley by
Til Kauschke off a corner that was headed off the goal line by the Huskies.
The Pirates' final attempt came in the 89th minute off another corner kick, this time from the foot of
Hugo Gerbore. After falling short of the net, the Huskies reversed field before
Matias Molina saved the final Husky shot as time expired to secure the 0-0 draw.
