Final Stats

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s soccer team (0-6-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) took a late lead on No. 1 Creighton (8-0-0, 1-0-0) before the Bluejays responded with three goals in the final 10 minutes of a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Caroll Field. The contest marked the BIG EAST opener for both schools and the fifth time The Hall has faced the nation’s top-ranked team, falling to 1-3-1 in such contests.

After Creighton took a 1-0 lead, The Hall found an equalizer from Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) in barely 60 seconds later in the 27th minute to send the contest to halftime all tied up. In the 72nd minute, Danny Bartok (Union, N.J.) pressured to create a turnover before chipping a shot past Creighton keeper Connor Sparrow to give The Hall a 2-1 advantage.

The top-ranked Bluejays found an equalizer with a penalty kick in the 80th minute, then went ahead in the 82nd before icing the contest with a fourth goal in the 86th minute. With the victory, Creighton remains the lone team in the nation without a loss or a draw this year.

Turning Point

With the Pirates up 2-1, a foul was called on The Hall against a streaking Lucas Stauffer in the box to generate a penalty kick for the Bluejays. I was at the game. It was painful to watch.

The Pirates took the lead late in the game. They really looked like they were battling most of the game.

Creighton then made a couple of substitutions, perhaps to get get some fresh legs in the game? You could see that they were in emergency mode. They had the look of urgency. They were definitely running faster and attacking.

To allow three goals in about six minutes was hard to believe. Did the Pirates think they didn't have to step it up as well? I don't know. When you're playing the No. 1 team, you better play every second like it's tied. Don't soccer teams go into all-out defensive mode in those situations?

Although I have to say that the first goal in that span was a penalty kick. I was looking at the play and it seemed like a highly questionable call by the ref. Granted, it was on the far end of field.

It was also sad to arrive at the start of the game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and see only about 250-300 fans at the BE home opener against the NCAA's No. 1 team. The crowd- about 90 percent students- later doubled, but it was not even close to being half full.

Some of the refs calls were questionable and didn't help SHU at all, but it comes down to coaching since once again no changes were made to counter Creighton's moves.

3 goals in last 10 minutes. Yikes! Last team I saw do that was a team from the Philippines - the Manilla Folders.
