Final Stats

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.– Samuel Geiler (Offenberg, Germany) gave the Seton Hall men’s soccer team a first-half lead but the Pirates were felled by a pair of goals in the final minutes of regulation as Rider came away with a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. The contest was the home opener for The Hall (0-1-2) and the second match of the season for the Broncs (2-0-0).

Geiler notched his first goal of the year in the 25th minute, scoring from a sharp angle after an impressive play to keep the ball alive on the end line. The lead held up for the next hour of match time, until Florian Valot tallied his second of the year in the 87th minute. Jose Aguinaga then put the Broncs ahead with 10 seconds left in regulation to stun the Pirates and keep the Broncs unbeaten.

Turning Point

In the 87th minute with the Pirates ahead 1-0, Valot worked his way deep into the area and fired a shot that deflected off SHU keeper Julian Spindler (Weiserbach, Germany) and into the back of the net. Less than three minutes after the equalizer the Broncs went ahead for good with Aguinaga’s goal.

Goals

SHU – 25th minute – Geiler (1) kept ball alive deep in area and finished far post

this was such a backbreaking loss. Felt sick the entire drive home after feeling like we had this one all wrapped up.

Don't know a lot about soccer but I have been told we have two freshmen that have high quality pro potential.

I was also told this team is probably a year away from competing in the Big East.

Can anyone more knowledgeable comment?

Don't know much about the makeup of the freshman. But how long has this coach been here to now say they are a year away from "competing"? I have been saying this for the last few years, this coach is in over his head. We are light years away from being on the level of Georgetown or creighton or the other top teams in the conference. Losing in the last minutes and losing to teams they should beat has been a thing happening way too often with this team

Again, just parroting what I have been told because this is not a sport I follow.

Manny left the cupboard bare. Until most of his players graduated and scholarships opened up we were essentially playing with a roster devoid of a lot of talent.

Now that those players have graduated and 'ships have become available the roster is on the upswing, albeit young. That's why I noted we are a year away from making noise in the league, not just winning a game here and there.
