Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Junior Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) doubled, tripled and drove in three runs as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Rider, 9-0, on Wednesday.

Seton Hall (25-20) erupted for nine runs over the first three innings to set the pace early. Five Pirate pitchers did the rest of the work, keeping the Broncs off the scoreboard. The Hall held Rider to the minimum plate appearances through six innings thanks to a pair of double-plays. Rider hitters didn't get a hit that reached the outfield until one out in the seventh inning.

The Seton Hall offense got started right away against Rider in the top of the first inning. Broncs starter Dylan Simcik walked the first three Pirate batters of the game and senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) followed with a two-RBI single through the right side. Junior Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) then tripled over the head of the centerfielder to drive in two more runs. RBI singles by Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) gave The Hall a commanding 6-0 lead before starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) tossed his first pitch.

Inside the Numbers:
  • McCarthy allowed only two infield hits over four shutout innings with three strikeouts.

  • Junior Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Sophomore Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Amazing how SH offense shines against major programs like yesterday, but is dormant against lesser competition. What?
