Here's some odds and ends from Matt. Who BTW did a super job on the interview.
On The Department of Communication & The Arts
"My understanding is that the Department of Communication and the Arts has expressed an interest in becoming a school. There was a faculty meeting of the college of Arts and Sciences to discuss a proposal (on Feb. 6)," said Esteban, who was meeting with the Provost to learn more, though he is staying out of the discussions as it is an internal process that needs to take place.
On Investments Around Seton Hall
"We have invested about 140 million in the last four years, which is more than any given four year period in our history," he said, listing off the various improvements across campus, including the addition of a fourth floor to Aquinas Hall, the rebuilding of Stafford Hall, expanding the parking deck, adding the new fitness center and opening the new varsity athletics locker rooms.
He said the next wave of improvements will include looking at Mooney Hall, working on Boland Hall and addressing the student center.
On The Student Center
Esteban said the student center will be addressed in three phases, with hopes of breaking ground on the project in 2017. He said the largest issue that needed to be addressed logistically was what to do with the cafeteria if the student center was torn down. After considering a temporary facility that would have cost $12-13 million, the school decided to build a new building where the parking lot next to Cabrini Hall currently stands after you enter the campus. The building will be permanent but will temporarily house the cafeteria while the new student center is built. Once the student center is built, the third phase will involve renovating the inside of the new building next to Cabrini, which will house admissions and also the theatre in the round.
On Acquiring Land Around Campus
Esteban said there are not a lot of parcels of land around campus available for sale and just as importantly, many of them are not zoned for the purposes Seton Hall would be interested in acquiring them for.
On The University's Relationship With South Orange
"I've been told it's improved a lot and this is from people who have been here a lot longer than I have," Esteban said, noting that as a university located in a town that would not be considered a college town in the traditional sense, compared to other institutions in a similar situation, "I think we are in better shape than a number of them."
