Mushnick shut down MLB ASG

Shut down is a little extreme. However, just about everybody but the commissioner realizes significant change is needed

He has a point. I wouldn't shut it down, but it's nothing like it used to be. Everything is a money grab these days.

The TV ratings were not bad and it did outdraw all other sports all star games, but that is not saying much. To me the home run derby is popular so I don't think the game would be done away with. He does keep rehashing a lot of stuff like the ESPN guy and Roger Goodell, but he is accurate about those things.

The NYT decides to get rid of its entire sports department (maybe the greatest of all time) and this guy still has a column in print?!

Eye eye eye

He's a voice of reason in a world growing crazier by the day.

Wow.

Even if you agree with him. His stuff is lazy. This is literally bullet points from any sports talk radio show days prior to his print

He just panders to the grumpy sports fan who romanticizes sports past and he doesn’t even do it with original material

Or maybe his take is accurate and calls out stuff rah-rah or PC types ignore?

What I find annoying about the All Star game as it is now presented is the chit chat with the players in the field during the game. Especially the pitchers having questions thrown at them during a wind up. The players joking after an error is also offensive. At least try to give the appearance that winning matters. I long for the days that players such as Willie Mays or Ted Williams wanted to and did play all 9 innings or more if game went to extra innings.

I hate that too tom. And also the sideline reporter blabbing halfway thru an inning. If i were kind the term sideline reporter would not exist.

I remember Willie leading off so he could get more at bats. And pitchers threw 3 inning of heat.

So he wants to get rid of the game because he doesn’t like it anymore and tough luck for those who do enjoy it? Should we get rid of all TV that doesn’t bring in 7 million viewers.

He is advocating to literally “cancel” the game because he doesn’t like what it’s become. If we got rid of everything Mushnick didn’t like they’d be a lot less to enjoy in this world

The whole idea about "protecting" players is such a joke. It's their job to play the game, not sit and watch it.

As an exhibition game it is literally not their job.

Also, no one ever brings up how many more games all these sports play AND the 12 month grind it all is now.

My godfather pitched about 7 mlb seasons mid 80s-90s. He would show up in MARCH without throwing a ball since the last season. Also used to purposely come in 15-20 lbs overweight because it was common theme you’d lose weight by May and be fine for the remainder of the season.

To your point; it is money though. Generations past the all-star game bonus was anywhere from 30-40% of their entire season salary. Gives a lot more emphasis to be in the game when it means that much to you

Again I agree with your protection idea being useless though. By the time they are in mlb it’s already over because of travel/college etc. I don’t know why teams haven’t figured that part out yet

Sorry, but that's laughable. I have no use for the All Star games in its present form, but suggesting that Mushnick is a voice of reason?
Those thinking that Mushnick is a voice of reason, please tell me did you think Mushnick was a voice of reason when he went after SHU players Marco Lokar, Arty Karnishovas, & Ramon Ramos as well as other foreign athletes attending & playing for SHU.

I wouldn’t call him a voice of reason, but he does raise some provocative thoughts that ring true.

I didn't even know the game was being played and it was two days afterwards that I took the time to see the final score. I could not tell you the names of three players appearing in that game. I know my lack of Interest might be exceptional but it goes for All Sports. College basketball is now added to the list.
