Myles Powell badly wanted to come to Seton Hall. So much so that he had to be forced to take recruiting visits out of state by Jimmy Salmon to ensure that South Orange was the proper destination for him.
Once those visits were completed he stuck with his original choice and committed to Kevin Willard's Pirates with Shaheen Holloway as his prime recruiter.
The other schools on his list were DePaul, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Pitt, St Joseph's, Connecticut and VCU.
Powell is from Trenton NJ and played a graduate year at South Kent School in Connecticut. There he led the team in scoring as a sharp shooting guard who had unlimited range and was widely considered one of the best shooters in the county.
Once at Seton Hall Powell, nicked named Cheese because of his love of the food, had ballooned to 245 pounds, a weight that hindered him from maximizing his potential and clearly for him to have any impact at the Big East school that would have to change and change quickly.
Mission accomplish. Powell shed an amazing 50 pounds from the end of his South Kent career to the beginning of his SHU one. Now he was ready to show Pirate fans what he could do on the court.
As noted Powell came to the Hall with a reputation as a shooter but now quicker with much more lean muscle he showed another facet of his game, the ability to take it to the hole and most importantly finish and or get fouled. That made him a dual threat and a defender's nightmare.
A key for Powell, and one Pirate fans constantly saw in his two years in a Seton Hall uniform is that Powell gets off a majority of his shots off movement, meaning his feet are seldom set. The result being he almost always takes high degree of difficulty shots. Thus a shooter who should be in the low to mid 40 percentile instead hits slightly below 38% from range. A figure not commensurate with his abilities.
Powell must learn to choose his shots better and also learn to use screens more efficiently and then his shooting percentages will be more in line with talent.
On the other side of the court due to his lack of size and possible fatigue from playing so hard on offense Myles Powell has difficulties with his defensive assignments. Especially staying in front of his man and not allowing dribble penetration.
Powell for a small guard is a plus rebounder and a good but sometimes careless passer as he turns the ball over twice a game compared to 2.8 APG.
Bottom Line
With the graduation of the core 4 seniors this past season Myles Powell, the reigning conference's Most Improved Player, will no longer take a back seat to his more experienced teammates and is now the unquestioned leader of the team both on and off the court. Powell has the personality and demeanor to handle that difficult role and still flourish on the court.
He needs a few tweaks to his game as noted above but I fully expect the young man from Trenton to have his best season at the Hall while leading the Pirates in PPG in 2019.
